I haven't been driving my car for a while (no work to go to ) but when I have I've noticed a strange gurgling sound from behind the driver's side of the dashboard when the engine is switched off.

The coolant level is correct and I have run the engine with the cap removed and the heating on full blast until the fan kicked-in - no change.

All suggestions welcome!

It looks like the brake vacuum pump has filled the servo with oil. When the ignition is switched off the vacuum is lost and air bubbles through the oil as the pressure equalises. Recall P017 on the D3 refers.

Does the gurgling noise happen on its own, or does it only occur when you depress the brake pedal with engine off?

Ask the dealer to do recall p017 if it hasn’t got twin vacuum pipes from the engine

How much of a PITA is changing the pump? I can't remember exactly, but suspect it is at the back of the engine somewhere.

All fixed (eventually).

By all accounts, replacing the brake vacuum pump at the back of the engine was a pig of a job but was just about possible without lifting the body or dropping the engine and/or gearbox.

Removing the brake servo was equally a pain, with the fixings spinning. I believe the fixing involved some 'open-heart' surgery of the servo and welding them so they didn't spin.

All that matters is I have my car back - so much nicer to drive than my wife's D4 - and now with very sharp effective brakes.
