Parked on a slope - the back drops after a day or so?

I have a drive that slopes down and I park the RRS on the slope. I have noticed that after about a day if I don't use it, the back drops down randomly making a clicking noise. It doesn't go to the stops but it does drop from the height at which it was parked.

Can anyone tell me if this is normal or is there a problem with the airbags on the back?

On the road and parked on the flat it doesn't drop and maintains a normal height.

Thanks

Pete

It's normal behaviour, mine does it also. My driveway is the same, it slopes down to the road and I reverse on. When exiting the vehicle, after about 10 seconds the back will drop slightly and after being left for a day or so, it will drop a little more. It's due to the air suspension re-leveling itself every few hours.

When starting up again, the rear will raise up right away. Kev

Hi Kev

Thanks. I forgot to say the car is facing down the slope so would be in the same position as yours. One side seems to be a touch lower than the other but I cant make out if the drive is completely even without any dips! - it probably isn't because we are having the whole lot re done soon Laughing

I got back last night after a shift about 11pm and there was about 14cms clear of the top of the tyre when I left it. It only dropped at about 6pm this evening when I was outside anyway and heard a noise, and it dropped.

I read that they do 'wake up' and re level themselves and its normal but some people say its not right and there is a problem with the sensor or the compressor.

How can you detect problems on the system? would there be a fault code or a light on the dash?

If its normal then phew!... early days of ownership and I am paranoid about stuff! Laughing

How much gap should there be from the top of the tyre to the wheel arch when it is dropped? Mine definitely seems a bit lower on the nearside but as I say, I am not sure if the drive slopes a bit.. Question

No it is not normal - the vehicle should remain parallel to the surface not the horizontal. My drive is also on a slope and height does not change while parked.

Thanks Garry. This is what I mean. Some say its normal and some say its not. So I am not quite sure what to do about it.

Does anyone know how you diagnose whether its a sensor, a compressor or the airbag unit? I am not getting any dash lights about problems and its quite slow to go down. I cant hear any air leaks as such. Confused

For what its worth, mine drops down a about an half an inch shortly after I've turned it off. It is noticeable if I'm leaning on it to get something out of the boot after switching off. And if left for any length of time that is say a day or two, it seems to be a bit lower all round as you can see it raising itself when the engine is switched on. Robin

Hi Robin

Yes that sounds exactly the same as mine.

I have seen Sports and RR's with obvious suspension problems because they drop to the stops and sit all wonky and mine definitely isn't like that.

I've been thinking maybe the angle of my drive confuses the sensors or something like that because on the flat it doesn't drop at all unless you select access mode.

I need to sell the house and get a flat drive to be sure Laughing

I wouldn't worry about it Phil. Mine behaves exactly the same as Robins and yours. All of my struts and airbags are under 12 months old, valve blocks have all been cleaned and lubed up and my compressor is only 18 months old. I'm 100% confident that mine yours and Robin's are exhibiting normal behaviour.

Mine has never been down on the bump stops and it has been left for a couple of months without being moved during lockdown. It only drops a bit when it's self leveling.

I suppose we could all start measuring the gradients of our driveways and the drop on all four corners for a bit of test data. Whistle Kev
