L320 - Wireless charging mod

Had this little idea when my car went in for repairs

managed to pickup a spare tray and Ipod mat .

My idea is to install a wireless charging pad under the Ipod mat

So , My phone is a Pixel XL.. So wont fit between the inserts on the tray. I'm going to 3d print some supports to raise the iPod mat level with the tray top . With it being rubber it should stop the phone sliding .

This is the charging unit i bought

Has this been done before on a L320 ?

Slight change of plan , Got the DIY wireless charger and it arrived broken ( round plate was all cracked ). I also didnt like the fact that it had only 1 charging coil which only allowed charging on a exact position .

Instead i have ordered this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07C7S...&psc=1

My plan now is to build a complete DIY 3d printed bracket/tray in which will make it sit inside the range rover tray perfect.

Should allow easy charging with its 3 coil system , anti slip and also hopefully look a little oem once the bracket has been made.

Interesting project. I'm sure some on here will be watching with interest to see if they can do similar.

Because I use my phone to give sat nav, I have a windscreen wireless charge mount. I've found that, with a cover on the phone, it can be a bit hit and miss with charging - sometimes it stops charging, only to restart again a few minutes later. Not sure if that might be an issue for you and your set up. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

What year is your car ?

I had thought of doing similar, (more in the cup holder area), but decided against it

Does your 2012 have the USB port under the cubby lid? I've found it restricts room on the tray. I would think the limp would stop your plan. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

You are correct, I have my car back now so can get some acquirement measurements . If i let the phone sit to high i don't think it will close ( especially length ways ).

I still think its doable with a bit of modification , and may have to sit at the front width ways ( so it dont hit the back of the lid )

Many thanks for the Info !

Ok just received my new wireless charging unit , Works great Wink

Fits perfectly between the centre part of the tray, tested with my phone on top and closed the Fridge lid and nothing catches Wink fits perfect. (Pixel 3 XL)

It does need to be raised up slightly so its more flush with the tray , and some sort of 3d insert to make it look like its meant to be there Wink

Pretty impressed by how nicely it fits in Wink

I will now try to create a prototype of the tray insert.

Looks good, but the biggest issue for me would be having to keep opening and closing the lid everytime I get in and out of the car

I imagine it could be annoying for some people . But it keeps the phone safe Very Happy and takes only a few seconds to open the lid place on charger and close again Wink

Sadly, its the only place available for a L320 that's within reach of the steering wheel and power.

I have had a quick go at creating something , 50% there . The ends need extending at an angle to fit the contour of the tray .

Very interesting, I like the idea as I was looking at doing something similar but couldn't find the right charging mat... Now that's solved Thumbs Up

Why not remove the 2 separators and make a form to hold you phone with the charger recessed? That way you could be sure the phone doesn't slide around and reduce the overall height. Further, if you allow some 'air' around the phone this would future proof it for a new larger phone at the same time?

Just must 2p worth...

I use this, more than a year; completely happy with it, fits and holds the phone fine (S10+), do not need to open and close covers, phone is in sight -it might be a 'poor mens' solution, but it satisfies all my needs on this (car phone wireless charging/ holder) perfectly
