"Service Required" in message display

Hi all,

I have recently got my RRS MY16 and the above has started to pop up just after the engine has started, despite it having a FLRSH, and recently serviced at the end of the September.

Is there any reason, other than the dealer forgetting to reset it that this should appear?

TIA

Hi - I and others have had this issue before - linked to oil dilution known issue and associated rapid countdown of the "next service"indicator - typically fixed under warranty by dealer with a new oil and filter change and some form of software update.

Thanks Prashan, very helpful. Is this problem considered urgent / priority? Clearly I won't leave it until September but would be useful to know if needs doing immediately.

Cheers

For me it was more of an annoyance - happened 3 times but seems to have stabilised of late. MY16, 3.0D HSE Dynamic, Barola Black, TV, Rear Entertainment, Opening Pan Roof, Meridian

It’s a sign of DPF regenerations not being completed before you switch off the engine and these days JLR will tell you that you are not driving the car properly.......... so it’s your fault! Consequences of ignoring it - engine will go bang eventually as the oil is getting diluted with diesel. Unfortunately it is a common problem and not only with JLR products. Another unfortunate thing is JLR don’t fit a regen in progress lamp on the dash for you to know if a regen has started. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Cheers Tim in Scotland. On that basis you would think the DPF light would come on instead, at least that would be more relevant to the actual problem!!!

Unfortunately I do tend to do mainly short journey's, any suggestions as to what I could do on a practical level to avoid issues going forward? Apart from changing it for a petrol Laughing

Hi Crasher73

Depending on how many short journeys you make in a week.

Take it for blast once a fortnight on a dual carriageway for about 20 to 30mins.

Or if I recall mechanic at JLR specialist said once every 300 miles.

Drive at 50 plus in sport mode and keep at or just above 2000rpm. You can do this by driving in 6th gear or at higher speeds.

Key thing is maintain at or above 2000rpm. This will allow passive regen by heating exhaust gases to the required temp and burn out the soot and clean the DPF

Do this regularly if your journeys are mostly short and hopefully it will help prevent issue.

As the service required warning is flagged then no amount of trying to do DPF regenerations will help, the car needs to have the engine oil flushed and filter changed as the %age diesel in the lube dilution has been reached. There is a software update for this but basically all it does is raise the amount of lube dilution the system detects before flagging up the service required warning. The regular high revs run will only help once the oil has been changed for new. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

So I took the car to my local JLR specialist this morning. All plugged in, no faults found, no evidence of oil dilution, no dpf regen issues, oil / diesel fluid levels all where they should be, software all up to date etc etc.

Seems Stratstone didn't properly reset the service indicator at last service!!!!

That is good. But still worth cancelling the auto stop-start every time you start up. That will help to avoid the situation of the DPF never warming up on short journeys. Besides which, it is likely to make the emissions worse, not better.

Just to add to that though is the issue of the 'service date' indicator being widely inaccurate even when no regens have failed. I mention in another thread where I had done 2 x 200 mile journeys, both non stop at over 60 mph average yet the service indicator changed by just about 1000 miles.

There's a bit of stuff on YouTube about this stop/start nonsense. It seems that if they'd introduced it in the 60s and 70s it might have made a difference to cars then but with modern cars it seems like its more of a problem than a solution! Shocked Robin
