If you want road tyre-matching wet tarmac performance, don't buy an AT tyre. All ATs score around E on the EU wet score. They are a compromise tyre so something gives. The AT3 is winter rated, however, and does pretty well in snow. Something that the pure road tyre won't do unless you run summer and winter options.

I've kept the old tyres as they still have 5-6mm left on them - and probably re-fit them as and when I re-sell the RRS.

Indeed so. I'm looking after some sheep for a mate for the week. It just means driving around the fields to make sure they're ok, etc. At the moment the ground is very wet. I've had a couple of moments on my Pirelli AT+, notably on Monday after the heavy rain of Sunday. I had to back off and have a bit of a run to get through one gateway which was very slippy and slopes up after a bump on the exit. Even with ATs, it was touch and go. On road tyres? It wouldn't have made it, I fear. Other areas where the ground is sloping, picking the line is critical - there are areas that are very wet and getting stuck is a real possibility. Heck, my mate got his Defender stuck the other week and had to use his tractor to pull it out, it's been that wet. I really hope I don't get stuck - not sure who to call if I do as he's away!

RRSTDV8 - now I have my AT's and my 13 tonne/ 6 metre tow strap give me a shout if you're stuck in rural south Northants There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

Almost needed a tow this morning. Ground very wet and driving through a gateway in tracks, on to old ridge and furrow pastureland, it just ran out of momentum and sat there with the diff locked and all four wheels slowly spinning. Took a minute of backing up a bit and running forward to get out. I've extended the track from the gateway by about 50m now. Two long parallel lines dug in to the grass. I was eyeing up the sheep and wondering how many would be needed to pull 2.5 tonnes of RRS! As usual, it's wet grass over soft ground that tends to get you stuck. These things clamber up rocky tracks like mountain goats but a wet field can stop a 4x4 quicker than dropping an anchor. Once there's no traction, you're , even with traction control trying its hardest. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Would it have been worth dropping the tyre pressures to say 15-20 PSI - doubling the tyre foot prints and then re-inflating as soon as you reached a hard surface? There is no replacement for displacement - W O Bentley

I did wonder but to be honest with relatively short sidewall tyres on these vehicles, you don't get the same effect as you do with the big high sidewall tyres. You certainly don't get much of a footprint increase and you do risk pinching the sidewall on a low sidewall tyre if you suddenly hit a firm bit of ground or a big stone. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Interesting aside - I was just looking at a colleague's all terrains in the office car park. They are 265/75 R16s and even with their greater side walls they still look slightly low in pressure/ large road foot print. A little more reassuring that mine aren't too bad either now there are at 40 PSI (assuming the 265/75's are running enough tyre pressure).
