DYNAMIC RESPONSE FLUID LEVEL

Hi All,

Sorry this is probably a ridiculous question for seasoned RRS owners. I've never owned an RRS before or even a car for the last 25 years!

My DYNAMIC RESPONSE FLUID LEVEL in my 2012 RRS SC is below min level, i haven't had a warning light come on yet. But it says in the manual this should always be kept above MIN level (please see image) & should not be driven if warning light comes on the dash.

I've only driven about 3000miles in the last 5 months since buying it. It was on MIN level when i bought it.

I have my first annual LR service coming up at the end of March (its now on about 63,000 miles), since buying the car in August 2019 (its got full LR service history) would you wait for the service for them to top up or they might flush the fluids etc.

Or would you buy a bottle to keep it topped up till the service?

My MOT is also coming up before the end of the month, having this fluid level below Min wouldn't fail the car would it?

Def get bottle and top it up or call in at a dealer and get them to do it sounds like you might have a leak on the system better to get it sorted now if under warranty. If the system runs dry it’s well into four figures for a new pump alone 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

Thanks so much Camelrock, yes good idea, i'll order one now and monitor it. And just pray to christ that i don't have a leak. I just got a quote for a main dealer service at £855. I think i've bought a car i can't afford to maintain!!!

Simple answer is don't take it to a main dealer. Ever. They are expensive and incompetent on the most part.

Take it to a decent indie who will charge you a lot less and do the work properly.

That's the single best piece of advice anyone on here can give you about your RRS. Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

^^^ I completely agree with RRSTDV8 regarding main dealers. Get yourself a good independent.

Also, yes, you should always keep your fluid topped up. You don't want to let the reservoir run dry and then have a costly dynamic response system repair bill on your hands!

I did a full fluid replacement and filter change on mine last summer. The fluid was black and horrible so I kept sucking out and replacing the fluid in the reservoir every couple of days over the course of a week or so, until the fluid was nice and clean. The filter is located in the valve block under the car below the drivers seat. 38mm socket to remove.

I also did the power steering fluid as it's the same stuff.

I can see i've got a lot to lean. I read in the manual it had to be texaco, but i'm guessing it doesn't make a bit of difference.

Also regarding the main dealer servicing. I bought my RRS with full LRSH so i feel like i'm tied in to carry on servicing it through the main dealer. Otherwise i could lose thousands when i go to sell. Because it seems so many people believe this proves the cars been well looked after. But after just being quoted £929 for the £105,000 mile service. (even though the cars only done 67,000 miles) i literally cannot afford this crazy price. It seems they charge around £400 in labour Crying or Very sad

Be it branded Texaco or Smith and Allan, from a technical perspective, it's the same stuff Wink Some people however, will always feel good because it has Texaco stamped on the bottle and that's fair enough.

It adheres to the same technical specification, the test figures are exactly the same. The likelihood is, S&A buy it in bulk from Texaco and rebottle it.

Concerning main dealer service history, consider the age of the car, how long you are going to keep it and the servicing cost savings. Main dealer service history is worth less and less over time. Also, to many knowledgeable LR enthusiasts, a good independent stamp is likely to be worth more than a main dealer one. LR main dealers are not very well respected within the community at all. At the end of the day though, you need to do what you feel is right for you Thumbs Up Kev

No you won't. The vehicle isn't worth enough for it to make much difference either way, quite frankly. Anyone buying it is buying an 8+ year old vehicle. A full service history with evidence is much more important at that age. The whole "full LR history" thing is what the dealers shout about because, well, they're servicing them!

Even if the lack of a full LRSH cost a few hundred in asking rice, you'll save that much anyway so you'll be no worse off. Being able to show a lump of receipts for work done by a decent indie is much more impressive than an empty book with a few dealership stamps in it.

As for buying the fluid for your top up - I've just done the same thing and bought a single 1ltr bottle from a dealership. Why? Because it was convenient as I was driving within 50m of the place t'other day. I'd noticed my reservoir was down a touch so bought some to top it up. Could have saved a few quid by buying online but this was convenient so I did it this way this time. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Hi again both,

Thank you again for all the advice regarding main dealer servicing, i'm going to search through the forum to see if anyone has mentioned any good independents in east london area.

Regarding the power steering fluid, Kev you have really done you home work. They completely identical. Kev what colour is your fluid?

It says on the info you sent that the colour of the texaco one is green, but my car has pink fluid in the power steering & dynamic reservoirs. I'd rather not add green fluid to the pink that's in there it will turn it a dark brown colour.

But i guess the colour of the fluid doesn't really matter. I'm now wondering if i should do the same as you and completely drain the fluid to check its not black like yours.

I love the shape of the l320 and want to keep this car running perfectly for the as many years as i can. 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

I know you are in East London but I have a fantastic independent garage that are LR specialists in central/West London.
They are not the cheapest but they are fantastic and cheaper than LR main dealers and do a better job!
In fact they are the oldest working garage in the UK.
I have been using them for the last 3 years and to be honest, their stamp in my book is worth more to me than some of the previous main dealer stamps (my brief experience with main dealers was enough to put me off forever!).
As others have said, after a certain age, the resale value of having a main dealer stamp is outweighed by the difference in cost of service.
I'm not involved with them in any way other than my annual service and MOT but they are called Belgravia Garage and I trust them to do a proper job at a reasonable price.

Hi Scrumpy,

Thanks for the advice, i spent most of yesterday researching the whole main dealer vs independent specialist. And i think i'm going to go down the indy route going forward.

I had found Les Pauls independent specialist in LR & Jaguar that a member on here suggested and there based in east london.

But they haven't got the best google reviews, although they have better reviews than my local LR main dealer service centre!

I might start a new post asking if anyone has had a bad experience with Les Pauls on the forum.

I will also call up Belgravia Garage tomorrow for a quote to do my 120,000 mile service, thanks again for the suggestion. 2012 RRS HSE 5.0 SUPERCHARGED Santorini Black

Hi Brit Plumber,

Sorry i'm an idiot, its the rad reservoir that has pink fluid.

My DR fluid, is a very dark greeny brown colour, would everyone suggest draining it a few times like knwatkins has done.

If they would, can anyone tell me how to do this, and how many litres it takes to completely fill it from empty?
