Prevent Keyless Thefts

I know you can use Faraday bags etc, but here is my method. My wife was going to throw out a stainless steel container that she kept tea bags or sugar in, so I took it and lined it with aluminium foil. Subsequent test proved I did not need the foil. Put the keys in, replaced the lid then took it out to the car. It would not open. Removed the lid & hey presto, it opened, so if you cant open the car standing next to it a scanner outside your house will not pick up a signal. The other benefit is, if you stick the container in a kitchen cupboard & your house is broken

They will find them now,,youve just told everyone on the internet where they are Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter ,,,,on the plus side you didn't need to line it with foil,it would work by just putting the key fobinside the metal container Andy.

Very much wishing I had read this thread before. My pride and joy was taken overnight this week, despite being parked some distance down the road from the house. Mad
Currently assessing replacement options, but any further tips on security and theft prevention for the future are much appreciated!

I employ nearly exactly the same method as this. Especially as both of the cars in our house are keyless.

Luckily, we do not store our keys near to the front door so it probably isn't an issue anyway. Kev

If you use the key fob buttons (I don’t), the signals can be captured and replayed to the car. MY2019 onwards may not be susceptible to this, but older cars are vulnerable. The protection here is to only lock/unlock the car from the door handle.

The risk of the signal from the fob being captured and amplified is certainly managed by a faraday cage (foil, metal tins etc)

The risk of burglar theft of the key can only be managed by cunning hide n seek!

Finally, always double lock the car as a habit. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

The key fob in the first post omits a signal ALL the time,
this is how the key-less entry system is so easily read,
either when you are out and about or when your keys
are hanging up in the house it doesn't matter..
(They don't need to be by the door the booster reads it in a much wider range)

The newer ones stop transmitting after a while if left still for a period of time..

making them harder to read..

The only way to stop your car being taken is to fit immobiliser products..

but they are not cheap... ===========================================

I used a faraday pouch and disklok when I had my RRS to reduce the risk of theft Confused

Is all this faffing about really necessary. I'm sure its been said before but the "advantage" of keyless entry seems pretty small. Why not force the car manufacturers to revert back to the good old system before keyless. Yes you might still be at risk when using the key buttons but - really, is keyless such a big advantage?

I think it was on this forum somewhere - the other problem of keyless is where do you put your keys when in the car. Of course my 2008 model has a special place to keep the keys which newer cars don't have. I have a small slot by the steering wheel where I keep the keys when I am in the car. It is purpose built and works very well. Rolling with laughter Robin

To be fair manufacturers are addressing it.

The Land Rover system now "knows" the position of the key relative to the car.

The Mercedes system has a key that goes to sleep and is only woken up when it moves. 2023 P440e SE Dynamic on order -cancelled

Ash3,

When I contacted Land Rover about fitting a Ghost immobiliser system on a new vehicle they informed me that the LR Warranty would be invalid on the car............ and this was the second edition off Ghost.

In the end I went down the route of an immobiliser which is recommended by LR ( and Warranty is still Valid ).

There is a small fob attached to my keys and the car will not start unless the fob is present in the car. So even if the keys are cloned ( i keep them in a faraday pouch as well) the car will not be able to be started. So even if I’m out and about and they cloned my keys in my pocket it wont start.

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Lyonhead - do you have details of the immobiliser? Currently negotiating with the insurance to get a replacement to my stolen MY2019. Looking to have every conceivable security device this time around to prevent it happening again.

If there’s an easy way to disable it I would love to hear.
