Just thought I'd add my two pence worth...
I've had my 2006 RRS 2.7 TDV6 for about 4.5 years and nearly 60K miles. It's now on 139K, and it's been brilliant, almost the only car you ever need. I've done a lot to it, but most of it has just been routine maintenance and wear and tear. If you are handy with spanners, then you can save a lot of money, because there is a big OEM spares supplies market. You don't have to buy parts from Land Rover. There is also a good number of enthusiast type independent garages and specialists that can tackle stuff that you don't want to. Just compare cost of the usual service items from someone like Advanced Factors (forum sponsor), to other cars, you won't find them expensive.
There's plenty of debate about which engine is the best, and it's obviously quite subjective. My friend is in the AA, and he says that the petrol V8's are the most reliable, other than that, both diesels have their weaknesses. I picked the V6, as I thought that if the turbo goes, I'd rather just have to replace one, rather than the two in the V8. Plenty of info on here about them. The only other thing to check is the gearbox, as the torque converters fail, and you will notice a judder at low(er) speeds when accelerating up hill. This is approximately £1.5K to £3K to fix, depending on the exact problem. (It's a ZF box, same as the X5, I believe).
Think that's all for now !
