Lights Left On (Help Appreciated)

Hi,

My partner and I went away for a week and she (yes no me Smile, left the lights on our RRS.

We usually have them on auto but when we came out of a valet, they had switched them off from auto so she just switched them back on... anyway.

I managed to get into the car with the manual key and charge the battery and got it started. I then brought it on a 60 min drive and presumed that would charge the battery up, but when I switched off the car, it would not start again, however there is plenty of power for the lights etc in the car.

I charged it again and brought it on another long 60 min drive, and the same again... I turned it off, but it won't turn on again.

Can anyone suggest what the problem could be?

Thanks in advance for your help, it's much appreciated.

Need a new battery.

Can’t cope with that discharge

You could try charging it for several days on a special charger.

Ok thanks, you reckon because it completely ran down that it destroyed the battery?

Charging for an hour when running is not going to put much charge into the battery. If it is not dead it needs to go on a multistage/conditioning charger for a couple of days to maybe bring it back - most likely dead though. Surely the lights are on gong would have been going when the car was originally locked. 07MY RRS TDV6

Car batteries don't care for deep discharging. It tends to damage them. If you have an intelligent charger such as a Ctek unit, it might be salvageable. Otherwise it's probably new battery time. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

If the batteries over 5 years old I really wouldn’t bother trying to save it and just buy a new one. Modern cars don’t tend to like charging flat batteries and doing this can destroy the cells and can (I believe) damage your alternator. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

A word of caution regarding the above. My first YUASA HSB019 blew a cell and took out my camera module after only about 5 or 6 months. Halfords replaced it no quibble but I had to buy a new module. The store manager said he’s had a few returned for the same issue (but not the same size) and I know of one other SDV6 owner who’s had similar issues with his newly fitted HSB019 but he never confirmed if it was the battery that had blown a cell.

If you do get any odd battery type issues just keep the above in the back of your mind. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)
