supplying dealer warranty claim or my own ?

Hi all, I'd appreciate your comments on this scenario. I bought my 2010 3.0 TDV6 on 1/7/19 from a used car lot, who sells "50 Ranges a month" to quote them. I've had it back 3 times for minor faults that they've fixed without issue.

On BH Monday I had to get AA recovered back home due to a mechanical failure, what seems like a sudden camshaft rattle with a few cylinders missing is the best way I can describe it. I have what's left of a 6 month warranty from the supplying garage, I've been in touch to explain the issue and they've said their 1 mechanic is on a 3 week holiday, returning on 16/9/19. Meaning they can't attend to my car until then.

Having spoken with the warranty company (Blackstar) they suggest and offer the option of 1) wait the 3 weeks and get the supplying garage to sort it, 2) take it elsewhere for a diagnosis, at my expense, then wait for the discussion between my supplier, the 2nd garage and Blacksatar as to what the next step is, or I have an option 3) to use my own independent warranty firm (motoreasy) to get the job sorted. My Motoreasy 12 month warranty runs alongside the supplied 6 month one, however if I don't use it within the 6 months of the other one, then the 12 months cover starts at month 7 of ownership, giving me effectively 18 months cover across the 2 warranties

The Blackstar warranty has a claim limit of £500 Rolling with laughter but of the 3 jobs already done through this warranty, 1 was over £500 and it was sorted without issue. The Motoreasy warranty I pay for has a limit up to the cars value and it's more extensive in what it covers.

I'm inclined to wait the 3 weeks in order to prevent a disagreement between garages as to the fault and the repair costs and to prevent a further headache for me dealing with 3 parties instead of 2.

Can I have your thoughts, cheers.

If you can live without it for 3 weeks, I think leaving it until the supplying garage is available would be sensible. If it's a really big issue then you might be in a better place to say "you can have it back and I'll have my money back, thanks" on the basis of it not being fit for purpose. Someone will be along shortly to say I'm wrong about this, no doubt. Whistle Rolling with laughter 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Sounds like a lot more than £500 to fix. I would ask supplying garage to pick it up so its on their premises. For someone selling "50/month" they need a lot ore than one mechanic. I would be inclined to have a trip to see them & you can see if the workshop is being used or not Whistle

If it really is likely to cost £10,000 then I would read the small print of both warranties.
and not rush things! You don't want to take it to an independent and this result in one of the other parties warking away from their responcibility or giving them any form of excuse that someone has taken the car apart etc...

It's likly to take a long time to fix, so 3 weeks is nothing in the grand scheme!

What is the statutory time for the sellers liability? Does the 3 weeks 'holiday' push you beyond this (I can't remember how long you get)? 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

Practically the 3 weeks isn't too big an issue, I wasn't keen on leaving the car with them for that period in case I need to get my other warranty involved. However keeping the job under 1 roof so to speak is bound to be less hassle

Andyk, not sure where you're getting £10k from but that'd more than put me a brand new engine in I guess, but you're right in respect of the garage possibly trying to walk away if someone else gets hands on.

Insiorc, I'm not sure on the sellers liability time frame. I'd have to research it

I'll have to see if I can get a diagnosis done from a mobile mechanic, possibly that's a none starter as I suspect some strip down will be required, rather than just plugging in a diagnostic tool. If I can get it diagnosed on the drive and it comes back as a big job, I may get my own warranty involved ?

Bearing rotation is a known issue on the 2.7 and 3.0 T/SDV6 engines. I had it happen on mine.

Does it sound like this?

Not these days it isn't. The price dropped about 8-9 months back.

A new short engine from LR, part number LR038168 is around £4.5k+VAT with a £2k surcharge. Kev

Yes. Your figure is about right Andy. When you add on fluids, labour etc, a new 3.0 is about £10k-ish total. Kev

Surely, under the Consumer Protection Act, the supplying dealer is responsible for 6 months for any and all faults that arise?

A "three or six month warranty" with claim limits is a typical motor trade con trying to evade those legal responsibilities.

Bearing in mind the potential seriousness of the fault on your car, you need to be well read-up on your legal rights. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.
