Headliner creaking

So, having had the rattle in my MY2019 instrument binnacle fixed (it turned out to be a loose connector that wasn’t needed in my car which hadn’t been taped up properly), I now have another annoyance - the headlining has recently started creaking!

The noise is definitely more of a creak than a rattle and seems to be coming from around the centre of the overhead console although could be either side if that too. I have a fixed pano roof but having checked around the roof lining I can’t see anything loose or vibrating. It seems to get worse as the temperature rises (eg if the car’s left in the sun or anything after first thing on chilly mornings).

The car is booked in at the dealers in a few weeks for them to look at it but I wondered if anyone else has had the same issue so I could perhaps give them some pointers?

I must say, I’m not impressed with the build quality on the car - although pretty minor issues in the great scheme of things, these niggles really detract from the otherwise great car and brilliant driving experience.

South Africa 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Siberian Silver

on my MY15, I've noticed some creaking when driving long distance/the whole day in sunny conditions.

It usually clears if I open the sunroof & close it again, which makes me think that is the culprit.

I spoke to the local dealer, and the workshop foreman told me they can re-seat the sunroof by a few mm to see if this will help, car is going in on May 6th, will let you know the outcome. --

Just to update on where we are with this rattle. Dealer had car for 12 days and refitted the entire headlining (involving removing the windscreen) and .... its made no difference whatsoever! The creaking is still there as bad as ever. They’ve asked me to take it back in on Friday so they can go for a run to hear it but I’m fearing they won’t have any further idea what’s wrong. Of course it’s not their fault - it’s the muppets in Coventry that can’t nail the thing together properly to begin with. No wonder they’re moving production to Slovakia or wherever it is

Has anyone else experienced this and, more importantly, managed to get it fixed? It’s driving me mental, although at least cranking up the stereo drowns it out!!

My fixed piano roof squeak solved by spraying the rubber seal with silicone spray (wd40), the rubber seal on the outside between the glass and body was causing the problem, also took to LR but they didn’t have a clue, so fixed myself

Thanks for that - I’ll give that a go over the weekend as even if it doesn’t work it won’t make it any worse.

I did wonder if it might be something to do with the glass, not least as it seems to be temperature related and thus perhaps caused by something expanding faster than something else and causing a rattle. It also seems to be centred around the overhead console or sun visors - definitely at the front of the pano roof and not all round - so that might suggest a seal issue. However it’s definitely more of a creak than a proper rattle so who knows but some WD40’s definitely worth a try. ****ing annoying whatever it is though! Letter of complaint went off to JLR’s director of quality yesterday (an underworked guy if my car’s anything to go by!!😂😂) so lets see what they say...

Just to be sure, I used wd40 silicone spray, could also try gummi pflege. If you push the glass from inside (near the front frame) you might get it to squeak!

I have exactly the same issue on my 2016 fixed pano roof car....the same squeak apparently coming from the overhead centre console.... complained about it and my roof headlining was removed and refitted ...the technician was brilliant and spent all day on it.... he applied lots of anti rattle tape and I thought he had cured it...

Alas last week when it was sunny it did exactly as you say and started squeaking again in my ear!
Aaaarrrgghhhh

If anyone cures it totally please let me know! Very Happy

Well.....I now have an answer to my creaking headlining thanks to an outstanding technician at the dealers...put mine in for its 3year main service and mentioned the creak again... went out for a test drive and struggled to highlight the issue but it did it slightly which was enough for him...
In anticipation of having the car back and it being oh so difficult to trace I wasn’t expecting much...especially as the dealers is the busiest place in the world.(had to wait 6 weeks for an appointment)...

However with dogged determination the tech was on a mission...what he found was actually quite concerning! But only after he had removed the entire headlining and the bonded fixed pano roof!!
The panel forward of the sunroof and behind the screen appears to be the issue. On the rear edge of it (where the front of the sunroof sits) it is 3 layers thick...I.e the top skin, a strengthening spar and the lower section going across the car they are held together with some sort of weld rivet...on the underside looks like a mushroom rivet the top panel looks like a spot weld...well on my car a number of these had failed thus allowing the top skin not to be affixed!

This in turn allows the top panel to flex slightly and creak! This can only be a failing of the robot welding when the shell is first put together! Basically the weld hasn’t taken...so if you have a creaking in the area of your roof console this is likely what it is!

Top marks for the dealer! That’s huge commitment to want to take out a fixed glass panel to want to try and diagnose a creak! Should be now a relatively easy repair to have the panel riveted back... I await!

Slightly concerning though!

Hi Farmer Chalk

That’s does sound a bit concerning, although also good in the sense your dealer seems to have diagnosed the problem.

My car is currently with my dealer with the same issue (3rd attempt to fix it!) and I’ve also got JLR in Coventry involved as additional technical support if needed (who are being really helpful and supportive btw). Could you tell me what dealer you used and that diagnosed the issue, since it might be worth mine and/or JLR getting in touch with them to benefit from their experience.

Beadles Sidcup.....

The only way to diagnose the fault is to remove the glass roof.... the welds fail or have never been conjoined along the rear edge of the front roof panel..I.e where the front leading edge of the glass panel sits...

They fixed mine with a bonded glue resin squeezed in between the failed joints which has stopped the panel flexing and creating the squeak. Awesome work of the dealer!

Thanks Farmer Chalk. I’ve forwarded that info to JLR who are liaising with my dealer in Glasgow and have offered them their HQ technical specialists to help out if needed.

I must say, notwithstanding the disappointment and annoyance this issue has caused, I’m pretty impressed with JLR’s efforts to fix it and to support the dealer in doing so. Just a shame it’s necessary on a £70k+ car...

I’ll let you know how they get on in due course.

Good luck with it....definately keep me posted...
I can’t believe mine will be the only car that suffers with this problem... I’m quite happy with the repair, they have now bonded the panels together and it’s not as if it’s a structural issue...
The noise was just one of those annoying creaks which only became apparent when it was warm...

Just got my car back after 4 weeks (!!!) at the dealer and their body shop who removed the pano roof and headliner and re-riveted the rivets and replaced all the clips etc. And it’s not cured the problem!!!

Initially it seemed to have gone but it’s still there, but only intermittently. Given what they’ve already done I think they’ve probably exhausted all the options so as it’s hardly serious - just annoying - I think I’m going to have live with it. I guess most cars have the odd creak or rattle...

Interestingly, the dealer apparently has a couple of other cars in with the same issue so there’s no guarantee any other car would be any better, even I could persuade the lease company that it’s worth them rejecting it, which I’m not sure I can be bothered with the hassle of doing (plus a new car would be even more expensive). I’ll just need to turn my music up and mask the creak.... 😡😡😡

Haggis, on my car, they replaced something to do with the sunroof for which there was a TSB out.

the invoice reads: "Carried out repair as per bulletin LTB01141v2 (020202)(76848937)"

the part number is: LR113700 (Lever - Sliding) --

Naks - thanks but that may be something different as I have the fixed-pano roof, not the opening one, so it’s probably not applicable to my car.
