MY12 L320 - retrofit of Logic7 Surround, DAB+, Digital TV

I just wanted to share a little project I finished off last week with this 2012MY RRS

Have added a few gadgets;

- Factory digital TV retrofit
- Factory DAB+ digital radio retrofit
- Upgrade from the 600W Harman Kardon to 1200W Harman Kardon Logic7 Surround

And a little twist, the car had a pair of Mongoose DVD headrests installed by the previous owner, they are pretty crap tbh and have zero integration with the infotainment system in the car, the owner asked if we could get the factory TV to display on the aftermarket rear screens.

It'd never been done before, but I thought it would be possible one way or another, so I said yes to the job.

Have done the Digital TV and DAB+ retrofits enough times before, and surround retrofits too, but in the Range Rover Sport it's a bit different because the rear surround speakers are in the roof lining...

So we have to cut...

And after all that I forgot to take a picture with the grilles installed.... but it looks 100% factory

I got a headlining from a wrecked car to use as templates.

And Gerry the guy who makes my brackets made me the templates to go from the front side as well. Worked out well in the end, with the grilles in place you'd never know it wasn't a factory install.

For the surround I had to make a retrofit harness, similar to the ones I've done for the Discovery 4.

My wires have the cloth tape around them, otherwise you wouldn't know.

Connection for the centre speaker in the dash, crimped terminals now.

DAB+ module in place, just need to add the wiring, again all made from scratch.

TV module under the drivers seat, all that wiring was made from scratch, hell of a job takes hours but I say that every time.

Half way mark I think.

Yeah

Sorted the programming and everything works.

Even got the Logic7 badges for the doors

So with all the "standard" retrofits done it was time to look at how to integrate those crappy Mongoose DVD screens...

The factory Rear Seat Entertainment has a video output from the front touchscreen to the RSE control module, for when you are playing DVD's or video from a USB stick, so I thought we could use this to feed in to the aftermarket screens. Only problem is the output is not functioning unless the car is configured for Rear Seat Entertainment. There are about 15x separate settings to turn on for the full rear seat entertainment system, and I was thinking perhaps just one or two of those settings on their own would enable the video output, without bringing up the whole RSE menu on the touchscreen.

With a bit of trial and error, we worked it out, got the video output going, so then just a matter of adding a video splitter to go to both screens.

And it worked! could hardly believe it! Nobody ever did this before...

Video here

So for a car with just the front DVD player, this works fine, but I added TV to this car which is a further complication. The TV is on a different output to the DVD & USB, but I found an automatic video switcher which solves that problem, if we select DVD or USB in the front, the switcher detects the video signal and switches automatically, likewise if we select TV, it detects the TV video signal and switches over.

Best of all it fits perfectly under the left front seat in the existing bracket.

Hats off to you - that's a lot of work and a top quality finish! Properly loom taped wiring, too; my impression of most audio places in the UK is that they just bodge it in and whack the trim back in place Wink

That's certainly what I found when I was pulling the old Parrot kit out of her indoorses Mini.. more wires than you can shake a stick at all crammed under and behind the stereo with nothing save the skin they were born with to protect them..

Should do as that’s one of the reasons why Cambo activated certain CCFs. I was looking at this last year and a Uk company made a box that they say would make it work but I retro fitted the full OE RSE instead. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Cheers, I try to do things as it would have been from the factory, if not better.

Thanks. Yes it does, same for the video output from the touchscreen.

Yep that's me.

Yeah this is why the switcher and splitter box are needed, and the CCF changes to get the output from the touchscreen working, there's no video output from the touchscreen otherwise.

So there was a company offering some sort of aftermarket rear screen integration in a single box? To be honest I don't see how that could have worked without the CCF changes... Jaguar XKR

Apologies Cambo, checked the email conversation with the company (NavTV) and I never asked the question about DVD, just the Tv. I guess I decided to retrofit the OEM Entertainment before going down the NavTV route. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Wow great write up.

That DAB module, assuming it has a Fakra connection going to it from the Ariel? Trying to find where to split the signal so I can use the factory signal for my headunit.
