Blocking Number Plate

Is there any particular reason why some forum members block out their number plate in their pictures of their vehicle? RRS Supercharged Genuine HST

But the roads are awash with RR to choose plates from. I can't drive for 5 minutes without seeing a RR of some type or another. Buckingham Blue Buckingham Blue RRS Supercharged Genuine HST

But surely they can do this just by seeing the RRS on the road/drive/street etc.? What difference does it make on a forum? Amd the VIN, this can be got by just peering through the windscreen - with number plate very handily on the front and rear.

If someone was goig to clone, would they not just go a drive for 5 mins and get some details? 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

The benefit of the forum theft of reg plates is that if I take the reg from an identical
car from Scotland, Wales or somewhere far afield is that I can use it for many illegal
activities before someone actually works out that the speeding tickets they are receiving
are not only not them but they are in another country, would take a long time to be tracked..

Just one use for stolen reg identity.. ===========================================

Whether it is pointless or not or likely to make little or no difference (possibly right on both points) it is up to the poster to decide to block or not and if it makes them happy then where is the harm ?

I think the point is that with them being on the internet, it make it so much easier for someone to sit at home googling images of RRS in the right colour. In less than 5 minutes they would be able to find a suitable registration to match the car they want.

Even if you think RRS are common, it would take you longer than you think to drive round and find a suitable match.

Add to the fact that the owner doesn't want the haassle of the speeding tickets coming thru the post etc.
If they want to blank them, they can!

Agree as above. A quick google search for Range Rover sport forum would bring you here and you then have a one stop shop for genuine RRS registrations. And if I was a would be reg thief, I’d go straight to the “Show me your car” or “What have you done to your car today” threads as that’s where everyone shows off their cars. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

So, A number of reasons for me why my vehicles very rarely make it onto social media unless they are obviously traceable.

1. many years ago before the age of social media I had a company car rat had its plate cloned. It went through a speed camera at the exact same time I was sitting at my desk sending an email. Because (in the words of the CPS) I should have provided the driver details of every driver in the company because I couldn't say who was driving my car.
2. a few months ago a picture of our camper trailer appeared on facebook. I know its ours as there are probably only 1 of that config in the world.
3. Someone I know on one of the D2 facebook groups had a picture of their D2 stolen and used to front a fraudulent sales activity.

So be careful, anything generic can be taken and used - number plates carry your identity and can be traced to you. Heavily customized stuff is much more difficult to "spoof" as it tends to get found out by those that know the vehicle or trailer 2012 SDV6 HSE (technically its hers)

I traded in a (green coloured) car with my personal plate for an identical car (in blue) and drove off with the personal plate on the new car. I left the plates on the trade in when I left. 12 months later and I received a parking fine for my plate in a town I have never ever visited. A lot of to-ing and fro-ing and eventually the council drop the fine as a "goodwill" gesture.

Lessons learnt include always personalise a vehicle that sticker in a windscreen might just save your bacon and never leave a personal plate on the trade in vehicle. MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

Reminds me a few years ago. The neighbour had a new car dropped off.

There were two identical cars parked on the drive with the identical personal plate. Laughing
Not sure how that was legal.

The only difference in the cars was some chrome strip.

I though a had double vision for a second Shocked
