Because at L494 launch the SE didn’t need the 306BHP motor - it didn’t get the full suite of off-road kit, basically it got AWD not mud plugging permanent 4WD - an off-road Pack was available with transfer box and the full suite of Terrain Response 2 programming at extra cost. L494 SE’s are quite rare beasts and sales of them were stopped in 2014 after only 12 months in production due to low sales. My local dealership has had one on their forecourt for nearly 9 months........... so even used they aren’t very popular 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Good marketing by JLR brought the price of a lower spec launch L494 RRS very close to a D4 HSE and a very specced up Evoque. It allowed them to advertise a “Price From” lower than high of those models in the hope that some customers might be attracted. L320 RRS also had an SE as I had one delivered on launch day and once sales had settled down (there was over a year lead in time in 2005/2006) they introduced an even lower spec S version of the 2.7. These cars were often ordered with factory options - for example my sister has a 2006 S but the previous owner specced it with the leather seat cover instead of cloth and with satnav which in 2005/6 was only an option in SE’s and S’s. That car is still giving sterling service even with >300,000 miles on the odometer and has outlived 3 Audi Q5’s that were bought to replace it but rejected due to bits falling off them and continual breakdowns. No expense is spared on the maintenance/servicing of the RRS and in all that time/ miles all that has needed replacing was the EGR’s - which was a warranty repair and they got blanked off! Often a high specced SE is a better price than an low spec HSE too 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Similar story in this part of the world, but slightly different badging. For MY15, SE and S variants were available. S only came with TDV6, while SE could be had with TDV6 or SDV6. TDV6 (both S and SE) variants were only available with single range transmission, while SDV6 and above came with dual range. MY15.5 SDV6 HSE Dynamic without the H . Yulong White |

SE is still available as an MY18 here with TDV6 3.0 Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Yes, as well as the SD4. Both engines now dropped for MY19.5 . MY15.5 SDV6 HSE Dynamic without the H . Yulong White |
