2008 TDV6 Oil cooler leaking question?

So I have a little oil leak and have had it in my local garage a couple of weeks ago and they changed the oil filter housing as thought it might be that, it wasn't so they had it back. They have just rung me to tell me they have spoken to a land rover mechanic who says it sounds like it is the oil cooler gasket and told my mechanic it takes them 4 hours to replace so hes quoting me 5 hours as never done one. Hes fine if I don't want to get them to do it, I use to mess with cars and think I am quite capable of replacing it but at my age cant be bothered any more to smack my knuckles. They are quoting me approx. 300 for the job but they cant guarantee it is the fault but are quite confident that it is.

My question is - is it really that much of a pig of a job? and would I be best letting them continue or is it a relatively easy job that I can do at the weekend

Cheers for any input

Thanks 2008 RRS 2.7TD in Stornoway grey, black leather and 22 inch alloys

Maybe you should trace the leak yourself

And if you agree it’s the same part get them to change it

Problem with that is the whole intake has to be taken off to get to it apparently which is what takes the time so if I have to take it all off to see it then I just as well replace it as its all of anyway

No

The oil cooler filter is in the middle of the engine.

Just pull the plastic cover off. 5 second job

Its not the filter, they have replaced that, they think its the gasket on the cooler which they say the whole intake needs to come off to replace it or even to see if the leak is coming from there, I must admit I have taken the cover off and had a look and you cant see much in there as there is loads in the way

I think im going to do it myself, I cant throw 300 at it and its not it and then find out it is the cooler itself and need to throw another 300 at it 2008 RRS 2.7TD in Stornoway grey, black leather and 22 inch alloys

If you’re reluctant to do it yourself, can’t you talk to that mechanic they spoke to with a view to him doing the work? At least you’d know someone competent might be doing it. Or find a local independent LR garage who can look it over? You need quality advice and expertise, which is often only available from your local indie; and normally much better and cheaper than the LR dealer. Robin

Yes it is but i'm trying to find out if its a 5 hour job or they are winding me up coz they dont want to do it and I am quite confident in doing jobs myself so was wondering how difficult it is or any special tooling or any complications in doing the job, Ive worked on many engines but never a TDV6

Don't appear to be any special tools required, but looks like the Crankcase Vent Oil Separator has to be removed first which looks like a fair bit of work. Might be worth downloading the W/shop manual and having a good read first and then decide if you want to tackle it.

It's not difficult.

The inlets and camcover are combined. I don't believe they need to be removed for this job. (they are a pain to remove)

The Y inlet requires removal. It lifts up.

Tools are typically 8mm socket and torx bits.

I recommend you purchase a gasket.
purchase a second hand oil cooler

and have a go at doing the job yourself.

You will probably be finsihed before you know it
