My 2008 RRS (TDV8) has started making a whirring noise and displaying “parking brake malfunction” messages. At this point, turning the car on and off a few times seems to fix it. But it’s gotten stuck in both the ON position and the OFF position.

Any ideas on the amount of labour (and parts?) required to repair?

Sounds like the module itself has a problem, but would need to be looked at to confirm exactly. I would certainly get it looked at as soon as possible and refrain from using it if you can,, it may save you a few quid. A module and cables will probably cost in the region of £500, if you leave it and it sizes on it may also cost you for discs and pads as well,,,, as happened to me! 2010 RRS, TDV8

It’s intermittent, and unfortunately I can’t avoid using the car. So I guess my best bet is to park on the flat at leave the parking brake off. Another forum suggested pulling the parking brake fuse... not sure why?!

Using the car is not the issue, just the brake,, removing the fuse will stop inadvertent use of the brake until youhave the chance to have it looked at, but I would advise to look at it sooner rather than later,, it will only get worse. 2010 RRS, TDV8

When I had an issue with my EPB, I tried pulling the fuse only to find that the fuel gauge went to zero followed by the no fuel protocol cutting in. I would suggest that until you can get it sorted you leave it off, be sensible where you park, and stick a slab of duct tape over the switch (or you will automatically apply it).

When mine was playing up I taped over the switch parked on the flat and with transmission in park all was fine. In the end pads and discs and an adjustment did the trick and no probs since.

This is probably a very dumb question...

For a multitude of reasons I haven't been able to have this fixed yet. So I've been parking on the flat where possible and just leaving it in park. When I'm at home I have to park it on a slope, so I've been doing the same there - is this likely to cause damage? I'm assuming it isn't a great idea, but surely the transmission takes more impact from normal driving than simply holding the car still?

(Luckily, the slope at my house is far away from the public highway, so it would only roll into some shrubs if it let go)

The park pawl is a fairly small thing and not designed for dynamic loads. It is supposed to hold the vehicle on a slope, however, so as long as you're gentle I don't see why it should be a problem.

Having said that, getting the EPB sorted would be a good thing to do anyway.  2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Not such a great idea, the solenoid used to disengage the pawl when you take it out of "P" will struggle if there is a load on the pawl from the slope. Easy to damage the pawl, too. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Agree with the guys over the use of "P". This car weighs 2.5 tonnes and just picture that being held by a small piece of metal inside your gearbox.

A year or so ago, I drove about 30 miles with the handbrake on as I didn't realise it had seized. My local indie stripped it down, cleaned it all up and put new shoes on at a cost of £160. So not an ideal expense but could have been worse. Robin

Have a read of this. It explains how it wrks, and you'll have an idea of what you're being charged for.

This is more than likely a handbrake shoe issue, so page 23 will show what's inside. If not adjusted correctly, they can bind or jam.

I noticed the other day, that when sat stationary on a slope, with my foot on the brake, the parking brake went on and off silently several times, HOWEVER, when I tried the same with the car in park, it immediately began the screeching noises.

Does this give any indication of what might be the issue?

You will get a good idea if you look at advance factors who are sponsors of this site. But before you shell out on parts have the system serviced and adjusted correctly. Dirt is a big enemy of the rear shoes, if yours has not reached the point of complete seizure maybe a good clean and correct adjustment is all you may need.. Bad news...

It's in for the work today - I hadn't used the parking brake for a while, just parking on level ground as advised, to avoid putting a load on the pawl. Up until now, all I had experienced was grinding / squeaking when applied + the warning on the dash, it'd never seized up. The garage were going to look at cleaning and adjusting as a first approach...

Just had a call from the garage - my Range Rover is stuck on one of their ramps, the with the parking brake locked on and refusing to release - even trying the emergency release below the switch... they are going to have to cut the cable.

This is going to get expensive... can anyone recommend or help with the following?
