Scratched Leather Seat - Repair or Replace

Hi,

I have a 2018 RRS. The car is in pristine condition with the exception of a 10cm scratch on the passenger seat caused by a key in a friend's back pocket Big Cry

I'll admit that I'm very fussy, so the question is - should I get it repaired or just bite the bullet and get the seat base cover replaced? How close to perfect can a repair get it? Any idea for costs of each? Is it a big job to replace the cover? Is this something that I could trust a main dealer to do or would it be best to get it done by an upholstery specialist.

Thanks in advance,

James

That would annoy the hell out of me and I would have to replace the cover, which is not a major job as have changed seat foam on a few RRS1's and can't be much different.

Cheers

Have you tried asking a leather repair specialist ? They would sort that out in less then 1hr. They do some amazing stuff.
I know a leather specialist in lowestoft which has carried out work on my disco 2, old sports and on my sofa leather and he is brilliant but I guess lowestoft is a little out of your way ?

Not sure if he would travel to the Kent area ?

His address and contact details :

Unit 29, Colville Road Works, Colville Rd, Lowestoft NR33 9QS.

Mobile: 07983460395.
Work: 01502 636525.
Email: richard@leatherrefresh.co.uk

I recommend Richard very highly Thumbs Up

If you are interested send him a email of the damage and he will get back to you with what he will do and how much. He normally replies back to emails in the later afternoon early evening as he is just so busy during the day.

Keep us posted how it goes.

Thanks.

Just got a price on a new seat cover - £724 inc VAT just for the part! I even phoned a second dealer just to check the first hadn't made a mistake. I was expecting it to be more like £300-400 (and even that seems excessive!). I guess I'll check with a few companies about a repair today.

I've got a couple of other prices now from other companies that come highly recommended:

£75 to repair

£220 to replace the entire perforated panel

£850ish for a new cover (including fitting)

I'm inclined to go for the replacement panel which I'm assured will match the existing leather 100%

I had similar on a contract hire BMW I once had - cost me £75 to get sorted - Chipsaway! Was a good job too.

As for your mate - stick that key so deep that it never comes back out to scratch again! Mr. Green

On a slightly more constructive note, I have had a few seats repaired in the past and also had a hip panel replaced in a leather Audi seat. In all cases, you couldn’t tell they had been repaired so may be worth going for the cheaper option. You could at least ask them to show you one he repaired already so you can judge yourself? Range Rover Sport HSE DYnamic SDV6 Velocity blue 2020 MY

Yes definitely get it repaired it's the best option especially with the crazy price of the seat base !

I am very OCD with my vehicles and when I've had work done on mine in the past you cannot tell where even looking right up close its amazing.

My Mrs drove my older L494 sport which I just got rid of last year and she was wearing a ring and plucked the leather like on your seat base but on the steering wheel Censored
I got Richard to come around and sort it literally 20 minutes later it was gone and couldn't even see where it was before ! So if they are good at repairing leather you wont see it ever again so dony worry Thumbs Up

If you can Get Some pictures once you get it sorted.

Cheers.

Per others recommendation - go for a repair - will only get damaged again.... MY16, 3.0D HSE Dynamic, Barola Black, TV, Rear Entertainment, Opening Pan Roof, Meridian

I would definitely go for the repair option.

I suggest to also pat-down all passengers before each journey. Or insist they de-robe. (Depends who you’re carrying). L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso
RRS TDV6 HSE Lux (MY2011)... Nara Bronze / Arabica - now gone!

Just an update on this... in the end I replaced the cover with a brand new OEM cover which I managed to get for a very reasonable price. I wasn't convinced about the longevity of a repair (I have bought the car outright and plan to keep it it for at least five years). I also considered having the damaged panel replaced, but the new leather wasn't a perfect match - most people wouldn't have been able to notice but it would have bugged me.

The fitting of the replacement cover was done by specialists and it looks perfect. I'm very pleased to have my car back to pristine condition. I've decided that the best way to prevent this happening again in future is to stop allowing passengers in my car Laughing
