so here is a sport my age with those wheels fitted so guessing they must by same stud pattern

Should be the same,,sometimes aftermarket alloys have different nuts. Andy.

If the wheels are off a Fullfat Vouge prior to 2004 you will need the Fullfat wheel nuts as the shank of the nut is a different diameter to the Sport and the Sport one will not go through the rim if I remember correctly.

As Sport wheels are spigot mounted I think you may find the flat washer on genuine sport wheel nut assists clamping force the washer also tightens against the wheel face, the nut then tightens against the steel washer which in turn prevents damage to the aluminium wheel by the nut turning against it when torqued up, not sure it has anything to do with the length of the shank, the same as the taper on the end of the shank is just that a taper and makes it easier to align the stud, wheel and nut.
