Which route did you take? Up the M1/A1 I’ll wager............ M40/M42/M6/M74 then across country via Biggar is a better way, a bit longer but less traffic and once north of Manchester on relatively quiet and unbelievable beautiful sections of the M6 through the East Lakes and Southern Scotland. I used to drive Stirling To Park Royal/Hanger Lane and back 4-6 times annually until recently in FFRR’s RRS’s, Evoques and only once in my Defender (never ever again in the 90 , as I did it in 3 days in the 90 but in 10 hours in the others!). North bound the first stop for a break was always the Gaydon British Motor Heritage Centre which has cheap fuel nearby and a really good coffee shop at the museum and not least if you call there mid week you can often hear but not see some very exotic sounding machinery on the Aston Martin/JLR test track behind the high trees and fences! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

West mids to Edinburgh is a regular for me, M5, M6, M74 then A702 via Biggar I have a slightly heavier right boot as round trip indicated mpg in my SDV6 is usually 26 to 27 mpg 😃 and that is with the "benefit" of several miles of 55mph running through M6 roadworks. Post Preston M6/M74 is typically clear and the A702 is an opportunity to hit the flappy paddles in dynamic and S mode. |

Personally I think these are meant for driving, but it does give me a smile to note people fretting about 0.1mpg here or there. 27 or 30 mpg: if mpg is a worry then v6 or v8 you are in the wrong motor in a disco, sport or full fat 😃 Mind you, my old Saab 9000 turbo did well to see 20mpg on a similar roure driven with a bit of gusto. Great motor.... 90mph in third gear |

Up until I bought the RRS, I have always had Jaguar and Daimler X300 4.0 Ltr Petrol with AJ16 straight Six Engines with average fuel consumption in between 9 and 12 MPG for every day car, must admit I do miss the Jags, used to take my jags to Cornwall from Uxbridge at least twice every year

I'm regular London to Stranraer* and its M11 (east London but you could go M25 - A1), A1 follow to Scotch Corner, A66 to Penrith and on up M6. Books at an extra 20 miles over the whole trip (as opposed to M1/M40/M6) but there are NO holdups around Birmingham, no Toll (if you go that way) no holdups through Staffs or near Wigan or indeed very rarely anywhere at all.
