I’ve had 2x tdv8’s L320’s 2x sdv6 L320’s 1x sdv6 L494 & I now have a my14 5.0SC & believe me the SC is in a totally different league,don’t get me wrong the tdv8’s don’t hang around & neither did the sdv6 L494 but every time I get in my 5.0SC & put the foot down it puts a smile on my face.

I’m biased but if you want to have fun and don’t do much mileage then for me it’s the SC, if you do a lot of miles and don’t fancy towing a petrol station behind you, it would be the TDV8. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

The reason I changed form the my12 red edition was because I fancied a L494 & one came up at a dealers the spec I wanted then after I’d had that 12 month I called into the local LR dealers just for a nosey & they had the supercharger in & when they fired it up I just had to have it,I’ll probably keep this another 12 month then sell it just before the warranty runs out,I’ve no idea what I’ll get next I would like a svr but they are just out of my price range as I like to buy outright.

The TDV8's EGRs don't seem to be the problem that they are on the V6s. Mine was still on its original EGRs when I had the glow plugs changed at about 160k miles - only changed the EGRs because they had to come out anyway so it made sense. The TDV8's turbos are a known weak point but being careful to allow them to idle for a minute every time you stop seems to help mitigate the risk. The TDV8 is an excellent engine, that sounds like a V8 when idling and when the right pedal is pushed, although not nearly the same extent that the 5.0SC does! If you can get the 5.0SC at the right price and your fuel costs (10k miles seems reasonable) are ok, then go for the 5.0SC. Let's face it, are you ever going to regret the performance? Oh, and yes, the 5.0SC is much quicker than the TDV8 even if the TDV8 is chipped. 500bhp will always beat 300bhp when wound up, even if the TDV8 would lug better from low down. If you think you'll do big miles, then the TDV8 would likely be the better bet. The low down grunt of the TDV8 is a real bonus when cruising along and needing a bit of extra go e.g. on a motorway. My SDV6 is not a patch on the TDV8 in such situations, even though it's pretty nippy when wound up (and once the gearbox has decided what to do!). 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

I have had both TDV8 and S/C although the S/C out performs the 3.6 it still has plenty of go, I did have it re-mapped so it had enough get up and go to get you into trouble. I have had the S/C re-mapped and supercharger pulley upgraded as well so have a fair idea on both as did have them both at the same time and would go for the S/C every time mainly due to the grin factor . If you want 24-25 mpg go for the TDV8 if you can live with 13-14mpg then go for the S/C but at 10k a year my personal choice would still be the S/C every time. Worth bearing in mind the early 5.0L did have timing chain tensioner and also supercharger nose cone bearing issues so would listen for any undue rattles from engine when idling.

Watched some video on youtube. Seems by design, those timing chain guide will fail for sure... quite a timing bomb here.
