Weird suspension fault

Hi All,

New to the forum and looking for advice. There is a raft of information on here to do with suspension issues but I can seem to find a resolution to my problem.

Car is a 2005 RRS HSE 2.7TDV6. With an AMK compressor.

Yesterday I replaced the bottom arms on both sides of the car with a bit of wrestling to get everything into position. I got back in the car and started it. The suspension height selector showed both access and standard LED’S on (weird) then it showed raising but nothing happened. This was followed by ‘suspension fault’ warning and ‘special programs disabled’

Checked to see if the compressor was running and all is good. I am going to further investigate to make sure the compressor is putting air out and check for leaks.

I have heard of wiring issues causing suspension problems as they run in wheel arches.

Have checked fault codes and get a couple related to tank not filling quick enough, low air etc. All points to the compressor at the moment.

Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.

*****update*****

After some fiddling and checking I have come to the following conclusion;

The air compressor charges the system as the inlet suction and outlet blow are both at good pressure. Removed fusible link and checked and all was well. All other fuses and relays are good.

Got it to rise to normal height but compressor ran too long and over heated.... ☹️

I suspect a leak somewhere but will have to pressure test to find it as well as use soapy water on the joints.

All very strange as I was nowhere near the air system when working on it.

Still no joy in clearing fault.

Have charged battery and the fault just says ‘suspension fault normal ride height only’

Think I will stick it into Land Rover and hopefully they will be able to tell me which component, of any, has failed.

Hi Steve,

Glad to see someone has chipped in. 😉

I now am having thoughts that it may be the steering angle sensor throwing the suspension fault as the steering wheel is slightly off centre after the lower arm change. I wonder if an alignment check may sort it?

All advice greatly received.

Steering angle sensor only logs a code when driving

Ideally, it’s going to need plugged in and checked for fault codes. We can all have educated guesses, but that’s all it is Thumbs Up

Hi Disco_Mikey,

The car threw quite a few fault codes.

The last one was C1131 air supply.

Would need to run a new check and see if there are anymore outstanding faultcodes.

Will post when I get them.

Assume you don’t think an alignment then a code reset will sort it?

If it happens when stationary, then no. But an alignment will still need done, regardless to stop the SAS throwing up anycodes Thumbs Up

Hi Iain,

I faced with a similar problem - we solved it (at least I hope so Very Happy ) two days ago.

I own a RRS 2006 2,7 TDV6, too.

In short - after 4 air struts (Arnott) and compressor were swapped (Hitachi was replaced with AMK) and new air ride software was installed (by the official service), the same things as described in your post started to happen to me.

After two weeks of all kind of testing (by testers, by observing, by measuring with the meter ( Laughing )) my mechanics made a conclusion, something must be wrong with the height sensor front left or rear right. Although they checked them separately during the process of installation of new struts and they seemed to be OK and although there was no errors shown on the tester, they noticed, the height shown on the tester differed from the actual height, measured by the meter, from one measurement to another.

They decided to change left front height sensor first - after they swaped it, suspension fault warning dissapeared.

Paralel to my mechanics, I was desperately searching for a possible solution also by myself - that's how I found your posts.

I am so happy, that I got my car back, it was a huge test of my patience. While I am familiar with the frustration, when something like this happen, I decided to write you about my experience - maybe it will help you.

Many thanks for the information.

It is good when people post their solutions.

I will look into the height sensors and see if can spot a difference.

Currently my suspension is still faulting and I have checked the compressor again as well as the relay and all is well. More fettling this weekend me thinks other wise it’s a trip to dealers for fault diagnosis.

Will keep you all posted.

Thanks for all the info.

I have changed the relay, the brake pedal switch and the exhaust valve solenoid on the compressor.

None of these worked so I changed the compressor and voila she is working again!!

I am very happy about that.

Was unsure as to whether an AMK compressor would fail.... turns out that they can do my 5 year old AMK Will now need a rebuild as a spare.
