L320 2010 turbo actuator

I have started a new post for future reference and it is in regard to the turbo actuator.

I have located the actuator with assistance from a post on the disco 4 forum and the link to this post is below.

I sprayed a load of WD40 onto the push rod and moved it manually but on a ride out, after 5 -10 minutes the following warnings came up:

P22D4-17 Turbocharger turbine inlet valve position sensor circuit - General electrical failure - circuit voltage above threshold.

P22D2-77 Turbocharger turbine inlet valve stuck open - mechanical failure - command position is not reachable

P22CF-71 Turbocharger inlet valve control circuit - open - Mechanical failure - actuator is stuck

When this happens the car has the restricted performance which means it is ok on the flat and downhill but struggles uphill, but there is no black smoke from the exhaust or limp mode.

Is this just a case of a new actuator to solve the problem or could it be more sinister ? Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

I'm hoping that is the case as a new actuator is about £70 and an hours work at most. Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

None of those faults are related to the turbo actuator...

Clearly, there is an issue with the turbine intake solenoid or its associated circuits

The solenoid is at the top RH of the engine as you look from the front. This controls a set amount of vacuum to pass to the valve itself. If you have had any work done recently, a Vac pipe having been knocked off or disturbed would be the first place to look Thumbs Up

Mikey, I have had a look at the solenoid and all appears in order with the electric wires in order and connected together with the vacuum pipes all connected and don't appear perished or damaged. Is it worth getting in a new solenoid as there is an original new land rover part for sale at £14.99 ?

For that kind of money it seems worthwhile to replace that and start investigating further if that doesn't sort the problem. Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Ok I have now put a new solenoid on and this obviously cured two of the original problems/readings given and the following readings are now showing:-

P22D4-17 (2F) Turbocharger turbine inlet valve position sensor circuit - General electrical failure - circuit voltage above threshold.

P22D5-92 (2F) Turbocharger turbine inlet valve position sensor circuit range/performance - Component failure - performance or incorrect operation.

I have had a look at all the vacuum pipes where I can and all electric wires appear in order with no breaks or wearing of the covers or insulation causing any shorts.

The problem always occurs between 10 minutes and 30 minutes into a journey.

Any advice please or is it time to visit someone with more expertise than my limited knowledge. Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

If yes, what was the failing part here ?

I have been to JLR in France where I live and they know that the problem is an electrical one between the two turbos.

The problem is that they could not replicate the fault to pin point the actual source of the problem.

I have now booked my car into an indie garage in England when I go back in November for a service and when I mentioned these problems he made reference to a 'diverter'. This is apparently an electrical item on the turbo that when the time / revs or whatever are right it then diverts from one turbo to another.

Sorry I can't be more specific but until I take the car in and he sees it etc I can't be certain what the part is actually called or exactly where it goes or a part number come to that.

The "diverter" you talk about then it must be the turbo shut off valve. Hopefully is only that Smile

AT LAST.... having been into JLR in France just before xmas they did their own tests and initially came back saying both turbos need doing OMG !! I wasn't happy and questioned them with my own diagnostics reading. (this garage in France has Jaguar , Land rover and Volvo cars....and apparently all the mechanics work together and help out which may have meant that it was not a Landie mechanic looking at my car.) I did ask for a quote for the work...just for a laugh but two days later they called and asked to have the car back in for a day to do further checks. Well today was the day and they tested both turbos which are fine and confirmed it is the actuator (although they called it the command of the turbos) and quoted 1,500 euros to do the work. They explained that of the two turbos, there is a smaller one and a larger one...and it is the actuator on the smaller turbo that is having the problem. Part being ordered and hopefully arriving tomorrow and work done in next couple of days. Got my car back today and no red light. Have then completed a drive of roughly 100 miles on fast single lane roads and motorway and all is running as should be.

Will now wait for the next drama Big Cry Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
