Hi all. Not sure if anyones ventured as far as removing the big black airbox and putting on 2 air cone filters instead?

Ive just done it and im impressed. The throttle response is increased and its even smoother up the rev range now.

Noit bad for 20 quid.

We shall see, i notice a difference in the car already. Going to get 2 cold air feed pipes sorted from side and front of car, my mates a TIG'er.

Can any universal cone filters be used ?
Any adverse effects ?

Why would you do this? Poor air filtration, possible oil issues - a waste of money and possible future engine issues. 07MY RRS TDV6

I did something like this years ago on a V8 RR cone filter and air scoop first bit of water I went through the jet of water hit the filter which got dragged into the engine. To add insult to injury I was dragged out by some friends in a Suzuki, something they reminded me about for a few years !
Anyhow removed the spark plugs cleared the water out refitted plugs all sorted, lesson leaned. You won’t be so lucky if that happens with a diesel.
I’d take the crap off and put back to standard. If you want more horses get a remap it’s a lot cheaper than a f***ed engine 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

I'm guessing the OP won't be going anywhere that isn't covered in tarmac - certainly deep water won't be on his agenda.

To the OP: if you do intend to go wading, be aware that water can get to those air filters by way of the gaps around the headlight (and some others). Anything that comes up past the door sills potentially can be pushed up as a bow wave that will find its way to those filters. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Its tarmac only. So far so good.. theres no lag at all when taking off, just goes! MPG has went up so far by 1. Getting 25MPG now according to the computer.

As time goes by you will end up with glazed bores in your engine and those filters are pore a catching the fine particles that polish the bores.

As far as performance goes - the Placebo effect works well there. Put the car against the stopwatch and there will be no difference. 07MY RRS TDV6

Yes after a time - is a well known side effect of these things - not an issue on a race car as the engines get re built all the time but when used on your road car it will speed up wear in your engine as it allows very fine particles through causing cylinder bore glazing amongst other things - is a well known issue.

Paper elements are far superior for everyday use.

But hey it is your car - if you want a bogan air filter - go for it. 07MY RRS TDV6

Have a look inside the air intake in a few weeks,Rub your finger round,it'll probably be covered in very fine dust.
Those filters need to be sprayed with oil to help catch the dust.If the engine had been tuned,then maybe worth the free'er flowing filter,but anyhow it will shorten the life of the engine.
If you like the look of them,maybe go for the paper/cotton type cone filter.
Oh,and lets be honest ,who really does wade in deep water in your nice shiney sport.I never have and probably won't,so i don't think thats an issue to most sport owners.

Oh,and yes ,heat soak can be a big problem,i run a cosworth in a dax rush,I've spent years trying various filters/pipes/routes.
