How was it better than the RRS in the snow?

My RRSs had 20" wheels and tyres which I found useless in winter even low speed braking resulted in sliding and heart stopping moments. My brother couldn't park his on drive with slope in icy weather

I had a PHEV as a renter the other day and I thought of Muddy (I must need an appointment with a shrink). PHEVs maybe reliable but I nearly fell asleep with boredom driving it. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Agree the Mitsubishi isn't going to get the adrenaline pumping but it does what it says on the tin and voted most reliable large suv last year

As I remember correctly, you were quite particular about only fitting tyres specified by LR in order to never worry about your insurance company. This rather limited you on tyre choice. I've run 2 RRSs now and never used LR specified tyres (or tyre sizes, for that matter) during winter. Ran on Vred winter tyres initially and then on Grabber AT and AT3. Have to say that both vehicles have been faultless in winter conditions. Both have pulled others up icy slopes, gone out and about in snow and never had a problem. Sure, they'll slide on ice if you push too hard but then anything will unless you fit studded tyres. Your bad winter experiences with RRSs seem to be particular to you. Most others who comment on using theirs in winter say how great they've been and how safe they feel. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders 2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed |

Winter tyres make all the difference. When we had a bit of snow in December, my RRS on all season tyres was not very confidence-infusing. In the Alps last month it performed brilliantly on winter tyres in much more treacherous conditions (apart from some speed related scary moments that I can’t blame on the car or the tyres). Same good performance in more snow here end of last month/earlier this month. My opinion changed about Land Rover being a must to go places, after seeing all sorts of saloons, estates and vans getting up and down the same mountains as us on snowy and icy Alpine roads. They must have been on winter tyres too. Going downhill was probably easier for them due to weighing less. I am not the only one who has commented on the RRS being twitchy in winter conditions but I'm not going to trawl through the forum looking for past posts to prove it

If it has to be an SUV PHEV then there is another one at £32,000 before ticking any option boxes ( of which there are a lot!) - it isn’t a “beautiful” car but there is a PHEV version of the Mini Countryman (i’m Swapping my RRS for one in April). It is quite a big car but whether a couple of St Bernard’s would fit into the back i’m Not sure. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Hi Tim, we did look at the Mini but found it to small for the wife’s needs and the driving position to low.
