RRS 4.4 SDV8 Do or Don't?

I have the opportunity to change to a new unregistered My17 SDV8 4.4AB. I have been offered a reasonable px deal which makes it cheaper than a like for like replacement for my SDV6 HSE Dynamic.

The AB will give me a much higher spec although without the new infotainment but I like the idea of more power, V8 sound and not to have the worry of a broken crankshaft.

Two questions, is there a noticeable difference in overtaking go, its only rated 39bhp more and how worse is the fuel consumption?

I live in remote area with little traffic and sweeping A roads, the SDV6 gives 33/34mpg week to week and up to 40mpg on a run.

I plan to move to a v8 purely because I have a bee in my bonnet about this crankshaft fiasco . Although I’m sure there is much more to gain than that . Do it . Thumbs Up

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Santorini Black

Hi. Pasted below is my reply to another SDV8 thread [I don't know how to link it, sorry]. Hope it helps:

Hi DangerMouse. Yes you are missing something! The V8 is superb and I wouldn't go back to the V6. Even though it was 6k dearer when I took the plunge.

So, I had a SDV6 for 4 years. Admittedly it was a 292bhp, as I had one of the very first. It was fine, good even; and I got 38mpg.

In Sep-17 I upgraded to a SDV8 AB. I'd already borrowed a V8 for a weekend and knew it was good; but I didn't realise how good. From the word go it has sounded much more interesting (muted growl), been much more responsive, with better in-gear acceleration, and it just pulls and pulls and pulls. Now it has 6,000 miles on the clock it really is loosening up, and absolutely flys.

In the V6, for an overtake, I used to manually knock it down 2 gears and then change up once it was building a head of steam. In the V8, you just don't need to work it manually - the kick-down is instant and so smooth and it whips through the gears beautifully with no drama whatsoever - sounding lovely Wink

Search this forum. There is another member who has a SDV8 and his wife has a SDV6 - they both think the V8 is a distinct notch above. Some compare vehicle weights, saying the V8 is heavy; but I think that is because the V6 is quoted as a basic spec model with the V8 quoted as a loaded, all the toys as standard AB.

Renaco (hybrid owner) will be along in a minute to tell you it is nose heavy. For me it is a revelation - my V6 was a HSE with no dynamic pack. Now I have all the electronic aids and the car is transformed; the torque vectoring is seriously impressive and if it is nose heavy then I can't tell that it is - open the throttle in a corner and the line tightens.

I've averaged 32mpg since new.

I have only one complaint - no V8 badge, so it is indistinguishable from a V6 (apart from the V8 rumble). But at least I feel smug knowing I have the 4.4.

For context, I drove an SVR and a BMW X5M before taking the plunge. Both fabulous, but license losers and as an everyday proposition I think the 4.4 SDV8 takes some beating. Current: Cayenne GTS (got fed up with waiting for LR to build my third RRS)
On order: RRS3 510e AB
Gone: RRS SDV8 AB, RRS SDV6, Vauxhall Nova 1.0, Nova 1.3 SR, Nova 1.4 SRi, Renault Laguna (why?), BMW 318is coupe (fabulous - despite having to buy a radio and tape player for it from Halfords), 323i saloon, 325ti compact (superb), 320td compact (awful), VW Golf 2.0d 4Motion (all the car you really need), BMW 120d compact (excellent), 118d compact (slow), 335d coupe (rapid)

Thanks Cooperman, I have found the thread now, interesting comments.

I want to drive a V8 before I plunder my pension, my dealer only has a RRFF 4.4 for me to drive but it will give me an idea of the engine - if it can move a FF it will more than move the lighter RRS.

Unfortunately its a 250 mile round trip to the dealer and I can't get there until Monday, so if its gone by then put it down to fate an move on to something else. 2018 MY19 HSE Dynamic, Santorini, Ebony/Ivory, Sliding pano, Adaptive cruise, Black wheels. Arrived 3rd September 2018

Hi Cooperman

Thanks for remembering me... Wink

Honestly, maybe a surprise, but after a few years now I would always prefere the SDV8 instead of an regular SDV6.
It´s the more appealing driving experience and the good feel of a proper Range Rover.

I took the SDV6 Hybrid, as I am really interested in technics and wanted to go for a special drivetrain. On order is also the next Hybrid, even it is only a four-banger petrol.

For understanding, I have anyway an V8, in my histroric RRC 3 door first series. The old engine sounds amazing, and a ride with a car without any electrics and Gimmicks, just a full metal beast is nowadays really amazing.

I was on the fence even with the positive SDV8 reviews but then the crank issues finally swung me and I placed the SDV8 order.

So yeah, up to you but thats what I did Smile

RRS V8 on reserve, going to drive a FF V8 on Tuesday, if all is OK will go for it, if not its down the road for a V8 Mustang and bank some money - sub £40k and £140 VED. Mad, its a bucket list thing but it will lose a lot less than a RRS in three years.

Hi Tony I’ve always had V8 diesel sports apart from the very first one a 55 plate 2.7 diesel which I soon upgraded after a couple of years when the V8 first became available. Not looked back since and in the latest 2018 model I don’t think you will be disappointed at all it’s a vast improvement over my 2016 year model. As soon as I took delivery of it I had a massive smile on my face it sounded so much better and goes like stink!! Every chance I get to put my foot down I do,it just sounds so good and fuel consumption is good to,actually doing 27mpg the car says nearer 30 but I can live with that with such a good feel good factor.Take the plunge and enjoy yourself, life’s too short!

Hi Dez, thanks, that is an amazing blue on your car.

The car I am looking at is new unregistered MY17, its over £16k below the price of a MY18 and I am getting a fair price on my trade in, so for me its affordable.

I would like the new tech on MY18 but will be forced to stay with a SDV6, if that is the way it goes I will order most likely for new reg. in September.
