Scotland 2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Firenze Red
Alternative tow vehicle with 3.5t capacity

Hi Folks

While my RRS is mainly a family runaround, it is occasionally being used to pull my 3.5t IFW trailer. I have a pre-1997 license so the trailer goes by 'weighed' weight rather than plated weight with regards to tow vehicle capacities if less than trailer plated weight, but I still like having a tow vehicle capable of the 3.5t, hence having my Defender and RRS.

Like others on here I would like to consider an alternative brand due to the way LR are going with their pricing and service, but 3.5t capable vehicles of a decent spec seem quite rare, just today triggered by another thread I looked online at the XC90 and it is only 2.7t.

So does anyone have any idea's of a replacement vehicle with 3.5t tow capacity or very close to it, of a spec to replace an RRS (offroad capability isn't so important, and no girly looking pickups)?

Thanks 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

My brothers have used them for towing mini diggers etc for years and swear by them - I got them to try a Disco but they gave up due to constant issues with gearbox etc Embarassed Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

G-Wagen costs more than an SVR RRS in the UK but is as crude to drive as a Defender, even the AMG versions are pretty crude, but at least Mercedes hasn’t abandoned ladder frame vehicles like LR. There is also a new Land Cruiser just launched in the UK that is a bit more refined than the previous versions 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

Thanks folks,

Unfortunately I've never liked the G-Wagon, I've never been in one but they were common where I was in the middle east and I thought they looked awful, especially the pimped up ones.

Andy, sorry for my comment on pickups Laughing but to me a pickup needs to have a dead sheep thrown in the back or a length of 6x2 sticking too far out the rear to look right. Modern pickups on the school run just don't look right to me...

That Parkers list was great, I never knew a VW Touareg had 3.5t capacity so I think I'll have a look into it. 13MY Range Rover Sport Autobiography SDV6 - mine

Shame they missed the RRS off the list. Whistle 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
