As you're soldering two components together it may be worth mounting them on a narrow plain board, that way the components will be protected from movement etc. you could then sleeve it in heat shrink and make it all tidy |

The cap will have the pins marked as positive and negative, negative goes to the feed and positive faces the controller. The diode has a band on one side, so based on the drawing a posted earlier the end of the diode with a ring needs to face the cap. |
