New RRS MY14 owner, so took it to LR Lancaster - Reading, Berkshire for a complimentary health check. Received a call evening before my appointment questioning why I was bringing it in and if any other work was needed. Explained just purchased and wanted a health check completed. Thought to myself this would also be a good opportunity to suss them out for future business, on this initial conversation, was not a great start. Turned up following morning and welcomed with same attitude, "just in for a health check ?", Yes, that is correct, as I stated last night.

Few hours later I received an email with a video file, No Audio, just some lovely visuals of the underside of my car. Followed moments later with a call, your front discs 70% worn, rear discs 70% worn, Rear Pads 80% worn. "Do you want doing ?" very blunt. Thought to myself, sure I can find better service elsewhere, so called Rovertune (Indy in Reading), Rob new his stuff at provide quotes very quickly.

Before booking in for the work, should the system/sensors tell me when i need to change ?? rather then going on a % worn from LR. Surely it would depend on use (10k miles a year).

Be great to get your thoughts.

Brake wear will depend on driving style more than actual mileage.

It may be that the front pads have already been changed (as they will wear faster than the rear due to brake bias) and it actually does need new disks and pads.

At 70% wear you should have some fairly serious lips on the edge of the disks, so have a look through the wheels and see what you can find.

It would be worth putting it in to another garage for a health check and see if they notice that the brakes are worn, but a lot hinges on whether the garage can be trusted. Brakes and pads are the usual targets for garages trying to make some easy cash.

Even with a MY14 car (which to me is virtually new!), do you not feel your getting taken for a ride?, it makes you feel your a hindrance to them

Welcome to the land rover main dealer experience!

Mine only went to the main dealer once, for a free health check. Was booked in a week before, but they failed to actually make a note in their book. I arrived and they weren't expecting me. "Don't worry sir, we'll do it while you wait". I waited and I waited. 3-1/2 hours I waited. Eventually they did it and i got a very brief report. They forgot to tell me that they'd done a video and emailed it to me.

That's the 1st and last time my car's seen this dealer. I always give them the chance to quote for work, services, MOT, bushes, etc but they've never yet actually got back to me with a quote. So I use my local indys and never had a problem.

If I see a car advertised with "full LR main dealer history" i take that as a warning, not a benefit. Merc C220 estate Sport AMG

Your car is far newer than my own, so forgive me if this sounds rude, but your car is 4 years old and done 40k miles (based on your initial comment), it's hard to predict life expectancy of brakes as it depends how the car is driven, if you're heavy on the throttle and brakes then they will obviously wear faster than if you're a careful driver.

I feel your pain with regards to the garage though, the biggest difficulty with owning any auto-mobile is finding a garage you can trust and is competent, this is of paramount importance with Land Rovers. While they are known for having reliability issues, a lot of these issues stem from being poorly maintained by people who don't fully know the vehicles. You may have a good garage that you can trust and has always been helpful previously, but if they don't know the specifics of the Land Rover marque then they can cause more damage than good.

Have a look round the forum and you will no doubt find an independent mechanic in your area who has been recommended.

Unless I have mis-read OP's original post, he has only just got the car and unless he bought it from someone known to him, would probably not have any knowledge on how it's been driven. That being the case, taking it somewhere for a check-up is wise. However, as has been stated, a lot of main dealers (a.k.a, "stealers") are just after your money.
Best advice as above is a good local independent LR specialist.

I always had full dealer service history with my old vehicle, but the dealers have got that bad that I don't even use them at all. Good friend of mine worked for the a dealership for 18 years as a mechanic, but left as he was pressured to upsell and recommend work that was not required.
If the brakes are only 80%worn ask for at least 20% discount due to 20% been perfectly good.
If brakes are 80%worn and have covered 8k, potentially you have another ²k worth of wear. MY12 RRS HSE

Thanks Guys, I get the feeling LR dealers, take you for a bit of a ride on the up sell.

To confirm, Car has 52k on the clock, I bought at 51k, so good point no idea how heavy/late the previous owner was on the brakes, therefore your right its hard to gauge.

from my limited experience, I'd check out that the indy(s) concerned are real LR specialists and if so, I'd certainly prefer a car serviced by specialists than by LR main dealers. Merc C220 estate Sport AMG
