Dust Caps

Please don't shoot me as this is probably a daft laddy question.

I have no idea how the TPMS works so......do the dust caps have any role with the TPMS? Reason for asking is that I want to get Union Flag dust caps for my new car but rather than pay £32 from LR for something that will probably get nicked every now and again, I was going to just buy some for a few quid from Amazon.

Cheers

They have no effect on the tpms although will probably disappear more frequently than every few weeks. I had a Vantage with AM caps and lasted only days.

Only advice is make sure whatever you fit is plastic! Metal ones will react with the valve housing and seize on...if you try and remove them by force they will snap the valve and the whole TPMS units have to be replaced at considerable cost! Shocked

As above, they don’t play any part in TPMS.

I bought fancy ones for my previous Sport and 2 of them (same side) got nicked after a little while. Replaced with normal ones and never bothered again.

If you do go for metal caps, applying a little bit of copper grease on the valve threads before putting the caps on avoids the problem Farmer Chalk has highlighted. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Thanks all. Will bear in mind to get plastic ones - but are the ones that LR sell not metal?

Thanks. Will try to find plastic ones elsewhere but if I can't get the expensive LR ones.

SVR575, do read the comments above about using metal dustcaps

Cheers

If you use metal one's just make sure they are stainless steel, no problems then have used them for years.

I’ve never had problems previously with metal ones but my previous valves were brass and rubber... the tpms valves are made of soft metal presumably aluminium.. if you don’t pre grease them they will corrode and fuse together..
My colleague at work was having some tyres changed, they tried to release the air from the tyre and every single valve sheared.. this necessitated four new expensive tpms valves and a day off the road waiting for new valves to arrive..

An expensive lesson learnt.. Shocked

I am going to stick with Farmer Chalk's advice. Last thing I want is to get stuck in the South of France with the valve shearing when going to check or put air in tyres!

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Java Black

Funnily enough - I recall reading on a forum about metal valve caps getting seized and thinking - "weird never seen that happen'.
Then about a week later a mate who lives in France came over in his Merc A Class and found his metal valve caps were seized on and he couldn't pump up his soft tyre.

Fixed now though - he 'phoned a couple of weeks ago to tell me he'd reversed over a box of nails in his barn so needed a new tyre Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE
