Agreed the SMG in the E46 M3s was an acquired taste - mine had a proper gearbox. The newer version of SMG (in the new M5 & M6) is much less tooth-loosening (in the less scary driving modes)... anyone try SSG that was available in the 330i Clubsport? Never driven a DSG-equipped car, but it is meant to be infinitely better to drive with than SMG...

I never liked to pull out of a road that was full of traffic in the M3! if you went on the power the back off it the car would be all over the shop Shmoogle you know what I'm on about here don't you?

Yep, you have to learn how to drive with it that's for sure. I think this is why the DSG wins the battle as it actually makes the pre-emptive gear selection decisions for you... and correctly, if you believe what people say.

ok cool..
thanks for the explanation..
I only ever drove an SMG gearbox on the Bmw Test track in northamptonshire a few years ago in rockingham.. and that was fun!! a lot of fun! put the sensitivity on top and booted it with the instructor actuallly egging you on.. superb! my sisters got a 3.2 DSG A3, and she just drives it round in auto whict is the beauty of it, if ayone else gets in it, it turns to S mode and paddle shifters all the way! very nice, love it whe you downshift coming into a a bend and braking etc, and the gearbox dips the throttle for you, so for anyone outside the car, or passenger, thinks you're a top driver!! hehe..

Looks v smart and the changes are all quite subtle. I suppose they know when they're onto a good design and not to muck about with it much... Thumbs Up

That's a side table = A round of applause must go to Listers for a great spread ........... in fact at the end people were taking packed lunches away for the weekend - there was that much Shocked

The interior is 100% better than the outgoing model.

Ps Pictures shaky I know - but they were quick snaps taken with my phone Nokia N80. Cool
