hi all

i have a 2017 RRS with 21 inch alloys on which 275/45/R21 tyres. In the near future I will drive to the Alps for a holiday and want to fit winter tyres. Please forgive my ignorance, but i have some questions.

Do I need to buy 275/45/R21 tyres or can i use a different size?

Is it better to buy wheels and tyres together or just change the tyres?

could i buy and use 19inch steel wheels and fit smaller winter tyres as i am not concerned on looks for this trip?

What is the best option for snow chains / snow system?

If money no object just buy a second set of wheels and tyres either the same size as you have or a set of 19's with something like 255 55 19 as that should be near enough the same radius and fit over the brakes with no issues the 19's would be the cheaper option i think as there will be more of them around

My MY15.5 came with 275/45 R21 all season tyres and I bought a new set of 20" rims c/w 255/55 R20 winter tyres.

I would strongly urge buying a new set of tyres and rims as it makes it MUCH easier to swap summer for winter. It also means you can move from 21" rims in the summer (which are not much good with winter tyres) to 20" which was the smallest I could find that would fit.

Make sure any new rims come with the appropriate TPMS valves.

I've taken the same route as hafman. I managed, back in August, to get a set of unused 20inch wheels and tyres for £650.00. The owner of the car had fitted a set of 22inch aftermarket rims. These have been fitted with 255/55/20 Pirelli winter tyres and I have a spare set of summer tyres, Michelins, in the garage. I spoke to our local LR service centre about TPMS valves and their advice was don't bother, just use regualer valves. You will get a warning but that can be cleared and the flashing symbol stops flashing after a couple of minutes.

Just remember that if your car is post 2013.5 build and due to be getting an MOT soon that TPMS is a legal requirement now so you willneed to reset it before having the car MOT’d. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

It’s only a mot fail if the lights on or showing a tpms fault.

If you get a 2nd set of wheels get some that are even numbered.
Ie 18, 20, 22
Much better selection of tyres. Also go for narrower and higher profile tyres
rather than flat rubber bands...

thanks to all who replied. In the end I asked the dealer his advice who informed me that my RRS has 20 inch brake callipers which means I need 21 inch wheels. I have decided to keep the wheels, buy some new winter tyres (continental wintercontact TS 850 P) and swap them over.

just need some storage bags now.. 275/45/R21 with zips any ideas?

I believe for Brembo brake calipers you need min 19" wheels as that is what I have for
my winter tyres. (07) model.
