Hi Folks

I'm toying with the idea of getting some 5 V spoke 19's with winter tyres. Do you think it's actually worth buying them and if I did and subsequently fitted them but it wasn't a wintery winter would they quickly wear out . Obviously changing back to my 20's in the spring?

Winter tyres are good in the cold and wet as well as snow. I had winters on my M3 and they made a world of difference to the back end grip. I won`t be bothering with any on the sport though, not for the snow we have. Steve.

Winter tyres tend to have blockier tread so there may be a slight increase in wear. But its not like trying to use studded snow tyres without snow where wear of the studs would be significant and pointless. And of course if you are using your winter wheels then your summer ones are doing no mileage and so will last longer. And the ride on the increased profile of 19s is more comfortable.

Not the same design wheels as you are considering but if you haven't got Brembos brakes then they should fit well and are ready to go Robin

Hi Steve,
Yes winters are well worth while, once the temp gets around 7 degrees and below they give more grip
All to do with the Silica in the tyre and the tread pattern , the Sipes.

They may wear quicker after the temp rises again so may be consistent above 10 degrees put the summers back on.

Don’t get confused with All terrains or Mud terrains though, they are Not Winter tyres!
They can work well in deep snow and mud as the tread pattern is designed to dig and chuck it out, the gaps between the blocks don’t fill up
But on wet cold icy roads Not good

My choice would be Road or all terrain summer tyres for 7 months and true Winters for 5 months

All seasons if only one set, which I now have

Winter tyres work better at temps 7 degrees & below,,once the weather gets warmer you need to take them off as they are a softer compound to summer tyres & the hot tarmac & soft compound they just wear out quick.

Winters are worth every penny. It's the only thing keeping you on the road...

I sold my summer wheels late last year, so ran my current winters all this summer.
Did get a bit squeally and squirmy when it was very hot (25 degs) but for the 4 days we had hit weather this year, I didn't bother getting another set to swap

Currently done around 20k miles on them, and are approx half worn

Completely agree with Disco Mickey. I've been out this morning and where others were getting very litle grip i had no trouble.
After getting my car in May I looked for and found a set of 20inch wheels identical to mine. They came off a new car so came with unused tyres, the owner wanted to fit 22inchers to his car, price paid, £650.00 so a set of wheels for my winter tyres and a spare set of summer tyres in the garage, bargain.

2. put the 19" on and try again
3. report the difference
4. new tyres fitted and do it again

Afraid I don't have enough posts to reply to your PM, so having to do so here instead:

I was intending to use them for another winter before we changed my wife's car, so they've just been sitting in the garage for the last 18 months (the last thing I did was get the puncture repaired in one of them and haven't really looked at them since).

The wheels could do with a clean, and I imagine probably have a little bit of curbing on some of them, but were in generally good condition. The edges on the tyres were going a bit (we live in Milton Keynes, which means we spend all our time driving through roundabouts!) but the middle sections have a reasonable amount of tread left - I can try to measure them tomorrow at some point with a tread depth gauge thingy if it would help?

I took a couple of pictures of them recently as I was thinking of moving them on - should hopefully be attached to this PM.

Women are always cold....at any age from my experience, when I bothered with them! Steve.

Well we popped up yesterday to Milton Keynes and met Ed and squeezed the wheels in. Got home cuppa Tea and got them fitted. Just a an immense big thanks to Ed for the offer and it's refreshing to know there are people out there like that. I've only subscribed to a couple of forums plus the internet wasn't a big thing or in existence back in the day but this one via my own experiences has to be one of the most informative and helpfull
