Up in Wales this weekend and there was a Pay And Play event in St Clears, Carmarthenshire. After some trepidation, I decided to go along and see what happens. I was slightly put off by some of the serious looking off-road machinery but turning up was put at ease by the marshals, one of whom was tasked to show me an easy route round. Easy? Bloody hell! Most of the challenges were things I'd never previously ever have contemplated but low ratio, mud rut setting and the car just cruised it. Oh, did I mention it was muddy? It was so very muddy! Bit of confidence and a I was not so much rushing around but trying things on my own I'd have baulked at before.



There was certainly a lot of bangs/crashes from under the car. The plastic "rock slider" things on the doors took a pasting but I've got plenty of spare lugs. The other problem was the Trust Towbar which gouged deep lines on the down slopes. I've got a compressor protector some place I'd put on before I do this again and how do I get proper rock sliders for the car?

Anyway, did I say it was muddy? One of the more impressive and serious off-roaders managed to get itself buried in a hole and in getting that one out, a number of other cars went down a slope in order to try and help it out. The hole was impassable and was the way out, so guys needed to get back up the slope. That wasn't happening on their own, so help was needed. So towards the end of the day found myself using the weight of the RRS to anchor the next bloke at the top of slope who was pulling out another two landys. Glad I got that winch!

Absolute bonzer of an afternoon for £20 & one I'll be sure to do again. RRS was absolutely spot on and I managed NOT to get it stuck. Very capable car indeed (but some of those specialised beasts look tempting!). Such good fun too and great camaraderie.

Grabber AT3s in 19/55 profile - seemed to cope well

Just put a set of those on mine. Glad to see they're competent in the mud. Hoping they're strong in the sidewall too when we on the tracks at the weekend in Les Comes. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

And how did you get on?

They did well. No signs of cuts on the outer sidewalls that I've found so far. Can't check the inner walls, obviously. Grip was good on rocky tracks and muddy areas too. Using rock crawl on a smooth muddy slope saw the RRS walk up quite easily. Indeed, it was easier than the specialist trucks with nobbly tyres etc. So far, I've been happy with them after about 2.5k miles. Hoping their winter rating is real rather than just enough to get the MSF logo. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
