Had a mare last week with the AB. 85 miles from home it started misfiring - "restricted performance" message up on the dash that wouldn't go away after turning off and waiting. Very lumpy at idle, whenever I drove it there was next to no power. Got recovered back home after 2 AA chaps couldn't fix it by the road side. Took 12 hours to be recovered - got home at 6 am on Tuesday - great fun Error codes they managed to read said misfire on cylinders 1, 3, 5 and 7 which, with the bonnet open stood in front of the car, is the bank on the left hand side IIRC.

Took the car into my local 4x4 specialist who I've used before with good results - very good rep. They couldn't find any issues. Coil packs fine, injectors fine, plugs fine, wiring fine. Didn't misfire for them once. Nothing to fix as far as they're concerned - and I do trust them although everyone has an off day.

The car was driving perfectly fine before it happened. I brimmed it with fuel about 2 minutes before it started happening, not sure if that's relevant I did double check the fuel cap was on properly

This happened to anyone else?

Maybe dodgy fuel from petrol station

If it's that simple I'll be pleasantly surprised, but slightly worried every time I fill up! Is crap fuel something that could cause an issue with these engines?

Could you have put diesel in by mistake?

Checked the receipt at the time as I was worried about that. Unleaded about £70 quid worth. Used about 15 miles of it before recovery. Apparently it's running just fine now.

Garages have been known to have had bad petrol/contaminated with water or similar

possibly wiring fault to that bank of coils. check black and red wires at joint.


But are you sure they are on the same bank ?

Apparently the wiring is fine. As far as I know the left bank is 1, 3, 5 and 7. AA chap swapped a couple of coil packs to the right hand bank to see if the fault followed thise coils, which it didn't. Voltage and resistance was fine to all coils as well. He forced a misfire on the right bank and IIRC the fault code showed that bank had even cylinder numbers.

Just got the car back. As the indie said, it is running perfectly. It's booked in for brakes to be looked at next week. Wondering if it's worth asking them to do any precautionary bits and bobs on it while it's there, related to this issue. Not sure what there would be for them to do, though.

I guess I'll be filling it up with v-power only from now on.

The saga continues. Car been ok on short journeys but took it to the office yesterday and after 40 miles while idle waiting at a roundabout it started either misfiring or something that felt exactly the same. Juddering and bouncing revs. Gave it a rev, carried on and made it to the office with a bit more juddering. Made it home as well but was quite nervous it was gonna clap out again. No error messages this time, either!

Indie says if they don't see the symptoms or fault codes they're just guessing. It never plays up on short journeys so never happens in front of them. They had a good look at injectors, wiring, coil packs, plugs etc last time and couldn't find a thing wrong.

I know there's something up and I'm losing confidence in the car, as is the wife. I'm willing to spend money on fixing it but I can't even get a diagnosis right now. I've seriously debated taking half a day off work and driving round until it happens, then taking it straight to the garage. It's a lottery though.

What would you do?

Could always treat yourself to a GAP Diag. tool, worth there weight in gold anyway and carry it with you, then when it does it run your own diag. test and check for any fault codes. Would of thought there would be more logged faults though.

Just a suggestion.

Funny you say that Col I was looking at them last night. Standard IID tool good enough or do I need to spend 5 times as much on the 'pro' version?

No the standard IID BT version is fine. Give Dan at Duckworth's a call I think they were doing special offer a short while ago, still around the £400.00 mark I think though.

with it you will be able to see Live values to notice which cylinder or bank is causing the problem before a fault code is logged.

This assumes it reports a number which matches the LR number.

You are unlikely to loose money on an I D


Shortly after is has messed around, you could remove all the spark plugs and see if 1 is a different colour or wet with fuel or whatever. This would help pinpoint a cylinder.

Rear plugs are probably difficult to get at.

See if you have the tools and have a go at removing an easy one to gain knowledge and tools required.
