My MY16 has just returned from its second service. Never needed adblue top-up between services and just before going into service it has shown a good few thousand miles until adblue top-up required on both occasions. Car has covered 17.5k miles and is driven in London in slow traffic regularly. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top

Sumting wrong if you are using a full Adblue tank every 5k miles. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

It can depend a lot on driving style as it is a selective catalyst reduction system. Meaning it only uses add blue when it sees excess in Emissions

If that is true then I would think mine should have definitely required adblue top-ups (but hasn't). It is either driven in low gears in city traffic or with a heavy right foot on dual carriageways/motorways. Both should result in excess emissions. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top Gone: MY16 RRS2 3.0 SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic, Carpathian Grey & Santorini Black Sliding Pano/Ebony & Ivory 2 Tone Gone: MY13 RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Black Edition, Orkney Grey/Ivory Gone: MY09 RRS 2.7 TDV6 HSE, Santorini Black/Almond |

SCR is very temperature dependent. The rate of adblue dosing will depend on the level of NOx sensed at the front of the catalyst (which will depend on the load on the engine and engine exhaust temp), coupled with the temperature of the SCR catalyst bed. If the catalyst is cool (slow city driving may never see it warm up) it will not dose much at all, to avoid ammonia slip from the tailpipe (which is not a good thing!). Under nice hot motorway driving, you will see the optimal level of dosing and excellent NOx reduction. When working properly it is astonishingly good at NOx reduction. 90% reduction is quite achievable, bringing NOx emissions down to the level of a petrol equipped with 3-way catalytic convertor.

I can't decide whether to call your dealer stupid or crooked. The Adblue tank was always sized to last between services. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

The adblue consumption rate is simply a function of the number of times that the car meets the conditions for NOx reduction ( based upon exhaust temperature and NOx production rate) versus the size of the storage tank.
