Steering wheel shake

Afternoon All,

Hope you're enjoying the F1 Very Happy

Anyway, I know this is a well known topic and I've suffered from it on the past. However, I've had the wheels balance properly (newest Hunter machine) and there where no vibrations at all.

Steering has been checked and all is good, 4 wheel alignment ditto but the cursed vibrations between 80-100kph are back Crying or Very sad

So what could this be? I've been told the shocks/ dampers are on the way out especially at the rear, could this result in the vibrations?

If not what else should I check.

Tyre out of shape
Worn wishbone bushes
Wheel alignment
Warped hub flange

Does it wobble all the time, or only when braking?

Thanks Mikey,

Ok so vibrations are minimal when cruising or accelerating. They are at their worst when rapidly coming off the accelerator or after/ during breaking and then remain.

On your list I don't think it's the tyres as they're new and filled with nitrogen? To avoid them loosing shape in the heat... Wheel alignment is also good as I got this done with the new tyres.

I'll get the garage to check the hub flanges and wishbone bushes.

What are your thoughts what I said about the shocks and dampers?

Front CV joints, and possibly a diff fault too Thumbs Up

Presumably all 4 tyres are the same brand/size?

Yeah tyres are Pirelli all round. I'll get the CVs and diff checked out also, I have noticed a whiring sound coming from the rear diff I think l, especially on acceleration, not sure if that's related...

Are the tyres the same pressure across the axle? I've found that a mismatch of pressures can cause a vibration. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hi RRSTDV8, yep tyre pressure checked weekly always run 42psi all round.

Mikey,

I thought it was 38/42 when using the loaded vehicle figures? I found that the Sport has less steering wheel shake at this pressure. I'll give the 33/36 a try if you think that'll help but in my experience the lower pressure exasperated the problem... Confused

Excuse my interruption (and ignorance) ' but what is a hub flange ?
The reason I ask is I also have a slight steering wheel wobble since fitting a new wheel bearing ?

Back in 2008, I had the same problem and it was a rear diff, it took LR months to find the cause. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
Gone - 2009 Buckingham Blue RRS 2.7 TDV6
Gone - 2010 Alaska White RRS 5.0 V8 Aspirated
Gone - 2017 Chawton White RRS 5.0 V8 Supercharged
Current - 2010 Java Black RRS 5.0 V8 Aspirated
Current- 2024 RRS P400 SE Dynamic

I had the hub give problems a few years ago on an x-trail. A garage replaced the bearing under warranty, and they warped the hub getting the old bearing out. They claimed it was ok but when I checked the run out of the hub it was oval. New hub cured it.

I have slight vibrations under braking but nowt I'm too worried about (at this stage).

But...

Sat the car up for the afternoon in Mid-France on Saturday, in the sun. It was about 27 degrees. Place was 1/2 mile from the A20, so coming down the slip-road and the wheel was shaking like a mad thing Shocked

Soon settled down to nothing. Never had heat deformation that bad before

With my current RRS (L320) there are a couple,of sections of freeway where I have a bit of steering shimmy but on most surfaces it's fine. I think that road surface does make a difference which is annoying as it's hard to diagnose. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
