Retro enable tow assist

So. Had a detachable tow bar installed on my L494 autobiography. Can anyone advise if you can have the tow assist enabled afterwards like many software driven items

Thanks. Peter

Hi Peter - can I ask which tow bar you went for. I'm currently looking at the Westfalia and Thule/Brink, but both seem to require a bumper cut.

Thanks!
Nick

Interested in the answer as well on enabling tow-assist?

On the bumper cut, Landrover supply a pre-cut replacement panel in a variety of colors.

I had a Tow-Trust fixed tow bar fitted (I tow near the legal towing limit and do not trust removable/retracting tow bars at this upper end)

Here is mine with the pre-cut panel fitted (about £110 from LandRover)

P.S Do not trust a Tow Bar fitter to get the correct tow-bar, they think they know better and ignore the references to L494 etc/ it took a couple of attempts to get the right one.

It tows well although I notice more movement on the perhaps because the L494 is lighter than my old RRS.

Sorry to take this thread off subject but I'm not aloud to pm yet, what kind of mpg to you get when towing your regal 2250?, thinking of swapping from my disco 4 but would like to see an increase in towing range 🙂

Hi

I previously had a Sport with the TDV6 engine (2012). This would drop to 20-23mpg when towing the Regal (based on the dashboard reporting).

My current Sport is the SDV8 (2016). This drops to 26mpg (again based on dashboard) and seems to tow a lot easier probably due to the torque/power.

Boat and trailer combination was weighed at 2.95 tonnes.

Thanks for the reply I got 22mpg average (on trip computer) over 600 miles last month with my regal 2000 on the back which weighs 2000kgs on the trailer plus fuel and gear. So interesting to see that a bigger boat doesn't effect fuel economy too much and nice to see if I take the plunge then I should see an increase in economy, although I will only be getting the 3.0 if I do. Does it tow as well as your previous sport, other than the extra power?

It tows well and of course the power is welcome.

I do feel that there is more tendency for the trailer to try and move the car and I think that this is because the new sport is nearly half a ton lighter. However it is still a heavy vehicle so feels very much in control all the time.

Yes, I seem to recall that the answer was that you cant retrofit tow assist and to be fair have never needed it. What I would say is I went with a detachable tow bar, I merely take the panel off each time so haven't bothered with a cut back panel as whole point of the style of bar I have is to not bash shins. I tow a huge twin axle caravan (1900kgs and 8ft wide) and it is ok. you know you have it on the back but guess that's due to lighter cars than my old disco. What I would say is my suspensions seems to be paying the price as I have a terrible knocking from the back left side now. This is on a 3 year old car and 35k miles!!!

Hi,
can I ask where you sourced you tow bars from Question

and any indication of price, may be by Pm, would be nice but appreciate if not.

Looking at RRS2 now and not many seem to have tow bars and a removable type would be good for me Thumbs Up

have seen a pic of the square receiver point but no idea who's make it is?

thanks

The fixed Tow Trust bar (TLAN3) in my picture above was £450 fitted including VAT and single electrics

The colour matched cut-away panel was a further £110 from Land Rover.

I see that Tow trust do a removable one (TLAN3VK) for £615 exc VAT RRP. Given that the RRP of the one that I had fitted is £465 exc VAT without fitting or electrics I would guess you could get the removable one for around £600 fitted inc VAT. 2016 RRS 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography Dynamic in Montalcino Red and Stealth Kit

Thanks for that Thumbs Up

Have managed to do a bit more research as had another test drive today so asked at the M/D so inc vat £1250
multi height removable £720
electrics £130
as you say the cut away panel £150
2 hours to fit £240

also looked at towsure and their fixed bar with electrics fitted around £550

so will have a look at tow trust Thanks
