Just be careful - if like me you use an iPod to hold music and this is plugged in to the power and connected to the WiFi, it will automatically update the iOS. This will eat Gb of data! |

You say its only for WiFi hotspot but Landrover have contacted me about servicing and details that look like the car reported it to them

As udash says, it is only for wifi hotspot in MY16. The service info etc. works via another mechanism (possibly another sim fitted somewhere as standard). InControl Remote works in MY16 regardless of whether you have put a sim in that slot.

Thanks for confirming guys - if it's just Personal Wifi, then I won't bother. I have a 3 plan in my phone with Unlimited Data and 12gb of tethering per month, so I will continue to use that.

I was under the impression that the only way that could happen was if somebody pressed the assistance button under the flap on the header rail. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it 2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced 2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW |

There must be a big change between MY16 and 17 in this regard, as you don't get traffic information, satellite maps, In Control Pro (for what good it is!), etc. without a SIM card (although it stores satellite maps once downloaded). |

Also, as is the case in my Porsche, if you connect your phone to the WiFi it will download all your spotify music if you are using CarPlay or the equivalent....data just disappears!! 2014.5 Mariana Black 5.0 Supercharged V8 Autobiography

In the phone menus (at last with iPhones) you can inhibit apps from connecting via data and they will only work on wifi (then you have the problem of high wifi data usage if you have the wifi hotspot in the car!). Each app has to be inhibited manually in the Settings menu though, you cannot inhibit them all unless you switch the phone back to not using roaming. I have to go through this whenever I go back to my ship otherwise I either incur huge roaming fees outside the EU or the limited wifi access over a satellite link gets clogged up with all the apps continually checking for new updates or data. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Can you use any sim card or does it need to be a data only sim?

Best thing I found when I had the new XC90 was to buy a PAYG data sim from EE or Voda and see how long / much of the data is used doing the things you want, then you know which one to buy. |

You can use any SIM (I use a free phone one), but I think you need a data SIM if you're using it as a hot-spot for multiple users. |
