Is I normal or possible for a turbo on a tdv8 to fail whilst the engine is just ticking over ?

Oh dear - what happened?

Think there was at least one report - the infamous 'Simplesimon' event when a TDV8 lunched its engine shortly after start up and at low revs.

Sounded as if the oil supply system failed, the turbo oil seals blew and fed engine oil straight to the intake side causing a hydraulic lock.

Presumably this would have been blockage of the turbo oil return pipe with oil sludge and it may have been building up for some time. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Mine just blew both turbos a few weeks ago due to an oil seal letting go in O/S turbo and that ultimately led to the N/S one being starved of oxygen apparently. Had only driven 1/4 mile, coasted round a 1st exit off of a roundabout, went to accelerate and umm... nothing! Recovered, RAC tried to start it but just clicked (knackered starter sound).

End result, 2 turbos, new starter.. had brake pipes done whilst body off and a service and a few odds and sods..... £4.5k. Now at just over 90k miles.. but the rest of it still going strong.. should keep going now for a while... I hope!

Just suffered the same. Have replaced turbos (body off), replaced brake pipes and under sealed.
Car back together and engine runs fine. However mechanic tells me she is using oil and suspects the turbo failure has damaged a piston. He advises investigation at a cost of another 2-3 days of labour and then engine repair.
What to do?
Car is 2007 TDV8 in great condition and low mileage (80k) but this extra cost means I will have spent the current part exchange value:blub:

I would want to know how he intends to repair it. LR don't sell bits for the TDV8 so a replacement piston comes from where? Broken TDV8s lead to new engines usually unless LR have changed their spares policy. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I would personally get rid, quite often Turbos going can do damage to the engine, generally more so, when it won't allow you to turn off.
Positive side, you know what's been done etc to car, but never purchase without a decent or LR warranty, this would have been covered.  John
