I can understand having a electonic warning the oil is running low but the only way to check your oil level by eletronic means not keen. How do you know what the oil is like? How do you check your oil level if the sensor becomes faulty. Or is there a way to check the oil manually that I havn't found yet. Had my RR sport just over a month and love everything so far apart from the no dipstick.

I think you will find 99.99% of members here would much prefer to be able to manually check their oil from time to time and not have to rely on a sensor - we all know how notoriously unreliable sensors can be............ 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I prefer a dip stick every time. I once had a rover 825 sterling. This had both the dip stick and a sensor, when I purchased the car, the sensor showed low oil but on the dip stick it was full. Sensor replaced (sump off) and it was fine, for 3 months then back to the same again. Very unreliable, the only reliable way is visual inspection.

You need to see the people who buy these Zara new, majority wouldn't open the bonnet for the three years they own it, certainly not mess about with dipsticks.
For them, a sensor is much better in between getting the dealer to service the car.

Thanks for all your replies. In answer to some of them. I know the oil will be black, I want to know where it is on the dipstick, I want to know how quickly it runs off the dipstick. Most of all its fool proof. I know many people wont check them and I suspect they wont check them electonically either. That's there choice. I would like the choice of checking my oil manually.

It should be both.... One as a fancy shmancy feature to cater to the vain and the other as a functional and fool proof redundancy.

I definitely like having a dipstick, relied upon the sensor on one of my audis and when I serviced it, discovered the low oil sensor wasn't working and it only had 2.6l in it. It should have had 6.5l.

For the record, when you check the oil with a dipstick, you are normally checking the level, not the colour

But with a diesel the colour also helps indicate the level as you can see the level easily. My 1st RRS had a stupid PSA style dipstick with several yellow beads on it - one of the beads dropped off and was never found.............. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Very true, it's particularly hard to see the oil level of a petrol at night with clean oil in it, something about artificial lighting makes it go invisible.

That plastic bead either came out with an oil change or got picked up in the strainer, they collect a lot of crap.
