Wishing my RRS sounded like an SVR!

I recently took ownership of a 2010 RRS 5.0 supercharged. (Following spells in a BMW X5 50i and Infiniti FX50). Certain aspects of the car I love but one thing I am disappointed with is the stock sound. Is this a common complaint? I am maybe being somewhat unfair but after hearing an SVR on cold start up the other day i'm dreaming of mine sounding even slightly similar with some fettling. Has anyone changed parts or all of the exhaust on the 2010 supercharged model? I have seen various videos on Youtube with silencers removed, custom straight pipes and full exhausts from people like quicksilver. Keen to get some educated advice before I decide what route to take. Thanks in advance.

I too would like to hear of any good systems or mods that people have made to exhaust sound.

I have a 2005 RRS 4.2L SC and am disappointed with the sound (the car just commands more presence!)

I went to a place today and they quoted me a Magnaflow "back cat" system but I was put off with price at Ł1,500.

I have seen somewhere else that will do a straight though cat back system for about Ł500.

Really don't know which way to go with this, I don't want more power, just more sound! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

If we all point our RR's in the same direction and accelerate at the same time can we turn back time?

Just do a search on the forum here, both of you. There are even video clips of cars with sections of the stock exhaust replaced. What you are basically looking into is removing the centre muffler (or the front and centre muffler, if your local community consists of mostly deaf pensioners). Regards etc.,

Note that the pops/bangs on overrun are artificially put into the engine map by SVR tuners, so you are not necessarily getting these in amount of an SVR. I rarely hear a pop/bang while changing gears or heavy braking in sport mode. Regards etc.,

I've got a custom exhaust that has the centre 'Snail' resonator deleted and also both rear mufflers. It give a nice roar when you're rough and also when you start it, but when you're gentle it's pretty much as quiet as the stock exhaust. No real drone from the V8 other than when pulling up hill at around 30, and again at 60, but when cruising at these speeds it's fine.

Any decent exhaust specialist should be able to make you a system for less than the Magnaflow one (Mine cost Ł800)

The burble and pops are from fuel combusting on the way out of the engine so not really something that is designed in, it's caused by over fueling so I would love to see the blurb where it says that it was part of the SVO teams remit to make the SVR sound that way.

When I kick my RRS over to sport mode and I manually shift down I get quite a lot of burbling and popping and it always has, granted its now more noticable due to the new louder exhaust.

I'll try and get a video but I'm not promising anything haha. Thumbs Up

Yes, exactly. In most applications once you lift off the throttle, fuel delivery is cut, the injectors cease to work momentarily. In order to achieve the pop/bang effect, there is a different strategy, namely a small amount of fuel is still being injected, however it happens right when the exhaust valves are open, so the fuel burns downstream the exhaust system with pops and bangs. This is fairly easy to implement in direct injection engines and these tactics are widely used by performance divisions of most modern manufacturers.

Here's the detailed explanation, please take note of slide 6 where this exact fueling strategy is described in regards of the SVR:

Well I'm happy and surprised to be corrected haha.

I made a couple of clips, not great but they give you a good idea how it sounds. The ACE pump is driving me crackers so please don't mention it, I've tried everything and so far I've spent Ł2.5k trying to resolve it.. Evil or Very Mad

Anyway, the clips:

Thanks for taking the time to do the videos Socast!!!

That does sound nice and definitely going to get that done!!!!

I checked with my insurance today (AXA) and they said as long as it is a stainless exhaust it is an "acceptable modification" so happy days!

Btw, are you sure it's the ACE pump as I have seen on another forum someone with similar problems and after replacing the pump, fluid etc it turned out to be the power steering pump but the sound was travelling towards the ACE pump! 2016 RRS SVR Estoril Blue

It's the Ace pump, when I replaced it it was silent until oil from the reservoir reached it. I've had it to a specialist and even he's at a loss as to why it's doing it Sad

Have a look for the thread I started and you can see what I've done to try and rectify the fault.. I've got two pipes to replace and I will have then replaced the entire system (bar the sway bars which don't effect the noise).

My system only has the front swirl/blend box, no x-pipe (I'm hoping it's in the blend box haha). Thumbs Up

I paid Ł450-Ł500 for a stainless exhaust, deleting the muffler and the 2 back boxes. Was from a powerflow place! 2006 Java Black HST Supercharged
