KICK FROM GEARBOX WHEN SLOWING ?

Hello Forum Members

Purchased my new car at the start of this month (rrs atb dyn 3ltr diesel) and so far have done a few hundred miles but one thing i have noticed is that when i am slowing down towards a junction and applying the brake gently i get what feels like a kick from the gearbox. I have never got this from when i am going up in gears as the gear changes are very smooth but have noticed i only get it when the gears are shifting down when braking and the kick is only felt once when slowing down. If i do a short journey of a few miles i am guaranteed to feel it at least twice.

I have read somewhere that the gearbox learns your driving style and will eventually adapt to suit that but something does not feel right and was wondering if any other members have experience this.

Thanks

At what speed? If it's just before you stop it's the 'box going into first.

I get a small shunt which I believe is fuel in the fuel tank, not from the drivetrain.
Edit : I know this because it depends on the fuel level.. Wink 2017 MY17 SDV6 SE

Put the thing into manual gearshift mode (put it in dynamic and use the paddles to select a gear) and let it come to a stop without touching anything gearshift-wise. In this mode it stays in 2nd. Then you will know if it is the 2 - 1 shift that is causing the jerk or not.

If it is, take it back to the dealer, it shouldn't jerk. Mine doesn't. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

I occasionally get a kick when slowing down, tend to be the 3rd to 2nd drop, but depends on how car is slowing down and this tend to happen when its slowdown quickly. Other times its hardly noticeable.

Hello Phil

You may be right because it feels like it happens when i am down to my last 10-15miles but i will keep an eye on it and see if there is a pattern when this happens but one thing i do know is that it doesnt happen everytime i slow down which tells me it is not normal would you agree ?

This actually feels like a sharp shunt when the gears change

will pay attention if this happens when slowing down too quickly as that would explain why it happens only every now and then

I had this exact symptom when I got our new My17 RRS. For the first few hundred miles, as I accelerated the changes were smooth as you like, but slowing down to a stop there was usually a very clunky kick-down, happened at least once a trip. Never did get round to taking it to dealer and the action has smoothed out completely now (2000 miles done) so hopefully the same result for you.

My 2014 does this too. The transmission is not nearly so smooth as my old L320 six speeder was. Progress eh?

The 'coast' down test is a good way of checking an auto-box: usually a sign the 'brake' bands in the box aren't releasing quickly. On a new motor it could improve with use or need of adjustment - on a old car its usually a sign of significant wear.
