Forgive my ignorance but what does "bump" mean

Lol, I was wondering that myself for ages until i saw a post recently that I think explained it.

I believe, and correct me if i'm wrong, it's a way of "refreshing" a post, if there hasn't been any replies. By adding "bump" it's like nudging members to respond as it pushes it back up to "new posts" or something like that.

It's an abbreviation for "bump to the top", so people notice the post, rather than it getting lost in the old posts that no one looks at. Hangover from the days of newsgroups/usenet, but probably bbs before then.
