Am I being realistic?

I`ve been looking at RRS for a bit now....and last year too, before deciding to keep the ST and spending 3k on it Embarassed ....and I`ve noticed a big difference in prices for similar specced cars. If I sell the ST I should clear 10k and I`d have around 4k to put to it. Soooo, my question is, will I really get a decent one for around 14k....3.6 or 4.2? When I say decent I mean something which has been cherished and looked after and in good condition etc.

I`ve noticed there aren`t many petrol versions about for that price range either!

If you put 14k on one, have you got at least a couple of grand spare for tax/insurance/servicing? Any repairs will add to that. Even "cherished" examples will be leggy at that price and getting in to the zone of failures. For example, a leaking anti roll bar will cost £1500+ to replace.

If by "cherished" you mean polished a lot and driven 5000 miles a year then it might be no better than one that does 25000 miles a year. Stuff fails on these things for fun. Mine has done 50000 in the last two years and has had fewer big issues than it did in the previous 3 years when it did less annual mileage.

Mine is cherished but it gets worked hard and only gets washed when in for a service. It looks tired externally and most would walk away. But it gets stuff fixed as soon as they rear their heads. I have a pile of receipts that I'd hate to add up. I bet I could have bought another one with the money spent on this one. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

For the later ones the tax is £20 extra a month and insurance is slightly lower than my ST. I always have "spare cash" for repairs, servicing etc Thumbs Up

Maybe I worded it wrong. I want one which has been looked after, as they say, serviced regardless of cost Very Happy I`d rather the important / oily bits are looked after than one which is snow foamed and clayed every other day Laughing I know how to clean cars so that`s not an issue.

If everything has been changed as required, then no, 140k miles isn't too many. There's no reason it won't see you to 200k miles if you want it to and look after it.

It would be nice to see evidence that the transmission and diff oils have been changed at the correct times, for example. The HST should have the locking rear diff. This uses different oil to the open diff. Make sure it's working - select low range, rock crawl, ensure 4x4 info is showing on the screen and put your foot on the brake. Select drive and as you come off the brake both diffs should show orange to signify locking. Make sure low range works too. I doubt an HST has ever been off road so it might never have been used by the owners. It should change with a slightest of noises - basically a couple of click/clunks. Any loud noises point to possible issues.

Make sure everything works. Cycle the suspension from access to off road. It will probably be a bit slow if the compressor unless the compressor is reasonably new. Check Terrain Response works and doesn't throw any errors. Check HDC works (if it doesn't then Terrain Response will throw a fit anyway).

Look underneath for any signs of grounding.

Check for oil leaks from the ARBs.

Check the headlights do their dance and go to the correct height. Easiest way is to park nose to a wall with the headlights on, turn off the engine (leaving the lights on) and then when you restart the engine the headlights will cycle through their routine.

Make sure the air con blows properly cold and properly hot. Cycle through the vents (screen, face, feet) making sure all blow air. Check the heated seats work. Take a multimeter and check the rear screen demist works. The connector in the rear spoiler can get corroded. The wiring in the rear screen can fail but this seems to be less common than the connector.

Check the EPB engages and disengages without screeching. With the door open you'll hear it make a sighing type noise. Any loud / harsh noises point to adjustment being needed. Replacement EPB shoes might not be far behind.

t's got a sunroof so check for signs of damp / wet carpets in the front footwells. The drain tubes can block leading to water ingress. As there are ECU on the A pillars behind the dash you don't want water getting there.

Oh, and then check everything works again! Thumbs Up 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

HST is the car spec level Wink

HDC is Hill Descent Control. It maintains a constant speed on tricky descents by clever use of the brakes. First brought out for the Freelander. Works very well but as it is hardwired in to the brake system a blown brake bulb will throw it out. HDC is used by several Terrain Response modes so a failed HDC gives a failed TR mode. Oops!

ARBs are Anti Roll Bars. On the Supercharger they are fitted as hydraulically adjusted units - called Dynamic Response by Land Rover. Works well and means you get a stiff bar at speed on road (good for handling) and no bar at low speed off road (maximising articulation). That's the basic version of how they work.

EPB is the Electronic Park Brake. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

That is one yucky looking RRS in my opinion. The TDV8 badge is an add-on by the way, they didn't get that until later.

The owner likes to drive without a his seat belt on by the look of it (the rear belt is plugged in to the driver's socket).

Sorry, but the look of it and the way the ad reads just makes me think it's a trophy car and unlikely to have had money spent on the oily bits. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
