Advice needed... Dead engine

I am looking for some advice / guidance.

My dad has a 2009 RRS TDV8 HSE, 93k miles, FSH (main dealer and independent).

Unfortunately, before Christmas, his engine blew due to oil starvation, resulting in a loud knocking, metal tracings found in oil etc, Land Rover dealership quoting a huge figure for new engine and 'worst case' both turbos.

The cost is more than the car value. It has a warranty, but only pays up to vehicle value. Anything more is his responsibility.

I won't go into details, but he has an insurance offer on the table, which I believe is low, whereby they let him keep the car to sell for scrap, therefore the offer + scrap value apparently equates to the value of the car. To me, it doesn't, but that is a different story.

What sort of value would this car get as scrap? My dad is not mechanically minded, so cannot do the job of stripping parts and selling himself.

Thanks
Mike

Try sending a note to member Disco Mikey as he has just been through the process of stripping and scrapping a RRS.

Have you considered getting a reconditioned engine fitted?

I would personally go for a good used engine, but make sure you see it running first and take any mileages quoted with a pinch of salt if the engine is out of the car. If you got a complete engine you would have loads of spare parts to sell on, injectors etc. Life's too short to drive boring cars !

He won't be going this route - would just sell the car as a non-runner, hence looking for an idea of price he could get

The warranty on the car is a main dealer parts warranty, and LR don't sell reconditioned engines, which kills that option.

There have been quotes from both LR and a local garage, both of which are more than the value of the car.

Have you just accepted the insurance value of the car or have you negotiated, because the value they have given is the value as a cube of scrap metal, I would say that the as the rest of the car is still perfectly usable it will be worth a darnsight more than the price of a crushed cube of metal. Could be worth a lot more as a car with no engine than as a car fit only for scrap. There are companies that purchase cars in this condition - IIRC CWS4x4 is one, basically a car recycling company. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced
2015MY Corris Grey SDv6 HSE Dynamic, the best car I have ever owned, totally reliable only a cou0le of rattles in 3 years, now no longer in my care
Also in my garage is a 1996 TDi300 Defender 90 County HT made into a fake CSW

No, the value we put on the car is higher (probably £6k) than the insurance offer.

I paid £9k for a running and MOT'd TDV8...

A dead TDV8 is not worth much...

Guilty for blowing turbos, at £3k a pop

And another £1k for EGR valves

And sub 22-mpg

And then the usual wear and tear bits that affect all RRS models

Sub 22mpg for a TDv8? I struggled to get mine worse than 28mpg and then I had to be playing total idiots all day off-road in low box and wellying it. On motorway steady speed runs at 70mph on acc I could often see 36mpg on my 2007 and 2010 3.6 TDv8's, one was an RRS and the other a FFRR Vogue 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Really? I see 23mpg and I drive with a load of mechanical sympathy, rarely over 70 on the motorway and I never nail a standing start. It's due a service, better get it booked in Rolling Eyes

On a long run, with the cruise sat at 64 mph, the best I ever seen in the 6 weeks mine was in the road was 25.5mpg
