Help please. Steering fault. Play in steering wheel

Hi, I have spent I while searching for a solution to this problem but can't find anything similar.

I was getting a clicking sound from the steering column area when turning the wheel. It didn't have any particular place in the turn it did it and got progressively worse. It has suddenly stopped and I now have about an inch of play in the steering. It sounds to me like something's failed/snapped. My garage have just said they don't know what it is but suggest replacing the steering column at the best part of a grand with the part being 600 on its own.

Does anyone have any Ideas? I have seen a second hand steering column for £40, would this be an easy fix?(obviously it is an unknown quality of part but I doubt it will have this problem)

Thanks, I have seen that thread but it doesn't quite fit my problem. My steering has never been heavy, it was just a claim cling sound followed by play in the steering wheel.

I have just had my lower steering column replaced which cost £156 and i hade the same symptons as you about an inch play in my steering wheel. Now the car feels like new and a totally different driving experience as you can imagine, The part is the UJ (universal joint) i believe. TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather f&r, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Dab Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, Heated steering wheel, tow bar, autobiography kit, piano black interior.rear camera, extended leather pack, adaptive cruise control.

My money would be on lower steering column. Sounds like it's really really properly broken to almost falling apart..... Bodsys Brake Bible

Change the lower steering column too, it is a bit of a weakness and will no doubt need doing anyway. Far easier and cheaper to do it when the steering rack is being replaced.
