Vibration on Overrun

Since I've had the car I noticed sort of gentle vibration on the overrun. As I had nothing similar to compare it with I put it down to a normal feature of the car itself. However, when I took it into my local indie for a check up (and without mentioning the vibration) he took it for a test drive and commented that the vibration was not normal.

In fact I believe I can now notice it when the car is cruising as well as freewheeling! (I may be being paranoid here but...).

It has to go back into the indie for some other work (posted concurrently with this post under "Gearbox Clunk") and so I wondered if any of you folks had experienced a similar vibration, and if so could you give me any advice on what to do or look for?

Are the two issues I've got part of the same problem?? Robin

In combination with the clunk , it might be a worn driveshaft

I've had my RRS since March 2016 and noticed that there is a clunk when reapplying power after say you slowed down at a roundabout and then applied a fair amount of power (say 25%) to get moving fairly quickly. Its as if it hadn't pre-selected the correct gear and clunked in when the power is applied. If you give it a couple of seconds, or apply very gentle power then clunk doesn't occur.

My local indie's first suggestion was to drain and refill the gearbox oil as he felt that this could cause the problem. This has
now been done, but this has not cured it. So I mentioned it to him again and he said it may be a case that the oil needs to be drained and refilled a couple more times in order to get the possible sludge that it in the torque converter washed through Question as, he tells me, this cannot be drained in itself.

Now I am well lost here in the technicalities of this and he could be telling me anything he likes although I have no reason to doubt that he knows what he is talking about.

My concern is that my last bill shows that the cost of the oil for a gearbox oil change is over £100 a time. If I have to do this a couple more times it is starting to get expensive. And it does not look as if there is any guarantee that this will cure it.
So my questions:
- has anyone experienced anything similar? If so what was the cure?
- does what I am being told, sound correct?

I have the exact same model and MY and have had that issue. The procedure your indie is suggesting is a 'double flush' and it makes sense to have it done; although there is a better procedure requiring special equipment whereby all the fluid is changed (usually referred to a a megaflush). Changing the fluid may help your issue but you should also get an expert to verify that your gearbox control module has the latest version of the software. Having the adaptations cleared and the clutches re-calibrated at the same time is usually recommended.

What you have been feeling is the gearbox setting off in 2nd gear then responding to your big throttle input by downshifting to first. A combination of old fluid, out of date software and poor clutch calibration may be causing the rough shift you feel.

A combination of the above plus a bit of servicing cured the issue on my car.

Does the vibration on overrun occur when say you are slowing down from high speed quite quickly like on a motorway off ramp and feel similar to that a flat tyre makes? When mine started doing that it turned out to be a front differential.

Premature front diff failure is a known issue on cars of that era. Expensive fix if you buy a LR sourced rebuilt diff at over a grand. There are places that offer in-house rebuilds for less money. IAWA 4x4 in Northants has beenn mentioned a few times.

Hope some of that helps Thumbs Up 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Brilliant guys - thanks for the info Thumbs Up . Where I am now:
The Clunk - Going for a mega flush. DrRob has given me details of who can do this so the plan is to get that done first and then look at the other elements Paddi mentioned (control module etc.)
The Vibration - will see if someone can eliminate the possibilities suggested by Hog and ShooterNeil and then see where that leaves me. BTW the vibration seems to be there even if slowing down gently ( i.e. not necessarily from high speed)
Thanks for all the thoughts and the quick response. I really want it sorted soonish as there's a trip to Aberdeen coming up at Christmas. Robin

Update on my issues:
The Clunk - talked to Dr Rob's contact and he was very surprised that the car might need a flush after only 57k miles. We agreed to see how it goes and I'll get back to him in the new year in necessary. The clunk does seem less pronounced now (although still there). Thumbs Up Or perhaps I'm just allowing for it Question

The Vibration - now diagnosed by my local indie as play on front propshaft and issues with front diff. They have taken a sample of the oil in the front diff and its very mucky. Next step is to contact my warranty company (The Autogroup) and see what they say but I believe I am in for a battle. Indie has quoted me £2205 Crying or Very sad

Paddi mentioned IAWA in northants if I end up nowhere with my warranty company and decide to go for a rebuild. Anyone got any experience with a specialist diff rebuilder in Kent/Sussex? Robin
