Bloody well p'd off..
after our server dropping off the network yesterday, after a bit of investigation by our IT consultants off site, they found, we have Spyware 32 or something on our network, brought in by an internal source, floppy/USB port, which is just great..

however, the bloody consultant was supposed to come this morning, to clean some of the PC's up and get the server back on, (they kept it disconnected to stop the virus spreading through the server (where all our data is).. but the guy didn't show, and has now turned his phone off.. was supposed to be here by 12pm latest.. hmm.. its now 3.15pm..
Have had 15 staff sitting round twiddling their thumbs all day, doing whatever work they can by paper, but unfortunately EVERYTHING is stored on the server, and as its been disconnected it means they cannot do anything.. im the same, managed to keep the internet connection still on for emails/rrsport surfing, but have had about 15 clients ring me, demanding their payslips to be done as they issue cheques and their staff have mortgages/DD's to pay so have to have cleared paycheques...

Am well racked off.. i can tell you..
Will give this guy a piece of my mind (IF/) when he decides to show up.
My dad just blames me.. as it was my idea to get the network all up dated and all the PC's changed.. he is like.. told you windows 98 was better!! which they were running before..

Tell your Dad you were more likely to get infected with something in the olden days - there was less inbuilt protective software around.

Sorry to hear this Kam. When you showed me the proposals a while ago, I did say that it sounds like they weren't taking antivirus & antispyware seriously enough. It is well worth investing in proper security. You soon realise why when you get an attack/infection.

As Smoogle said, you have better protection now than you did with Win98. At least XP has a basic firewall (in Service Pack 2) and you should be getting your o/s security updates. Win98 is no longer supported. Matt

Well worth running Linux on the server. Your data is much safer when not on a Microsoft platform. Matt

well the guy finally turned up and he located the spyware down to three local pc's.. he has run scans across them, and has cleared two, and has installed some type of software which will trigger if it notices the spyware in operation again and will start to close it down again.

Our data is quite secure, twin servers and offsite backup every few hours, and another removable LAN hard drive which i take home on the weekends with me. The IT guy, did say the virus source was an email opened on one PC in particular, so he is going to find the source for us precisely tommorow. Just one more pc to scan, and remove the spyware from then he will get server 2 up and running and reconnected to the network. I did ask them to install more anti virus stuff after consulting with you back in Jan Matt, and they did say ok, and installed some other stuff. I will ask what is currently installed and see if this is adequate as we start to rely more and more on the network and servers as time goes by. They disconnected the servers from every pc, as they didn't want the spyware to span across the network, and just left the internet connectivity on just to keep our emails and stuff on. Today i was accessing the 2nd server and giving out files to the staff that needed to be done today, as we do have a lot of VAT dates looming, and we can't afford for clients to take late penalties. is a real pain in the ass, and really embarassing to tell clients that our server is down!!

Hopefully your "IT guy" will learn a lesson from this that AV and anti-spyware solutions are as important to businesses today as email clients and word processors
