Dealers don't know everything lol

So, I called my local dealer to enquire about a service, apparently they don't make a 2006 4.4 v8 petrol, only a 2.7,3.6td and a 4.2 sc!

Laughing

Why not? I have always used a JLR dealership for all my servicing etc in and out of a Warranty. John

My chugger is 6 years old now and I stopped using a main dealer after its 4 year service (I wished i had stopped after the 3 year one). I am much happier with the quality of service I get from specialists, I can build a stronger relationship, and there are cash savings too.

I think servicing a car in warranty using a specialist would be a step too far for me... but outside warranty it is a no brainer. Keep all the paperwork, show you use good quality service providers, and I do not believe it would make it easier to sell a one owner car. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... More money than sense... Wink

LR dealerships are overpriced and, in my experience, barely incompetent. No, that's not a typo... Whistle

Use a decent indie and you'll save money and get a better service. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I have used a specialist in the past for a new vehicle and as long as they use genuine parts and the service is done on time it's 100% allowed. Plus a hell of a lot cheaper.

"You are not obliged (since October 2003) to get the car serviced by a franchise dealer during the warranty period. You must though get it serviced according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts"

The only positive of using a dealer is that they do tend to look after you out of warranty if something goes wrong. I've seen customers get a 60% contribution towards replacement engines when a vehicle is 5 years old. They call it "goodwill".

Personally I don't believe dealers work to the same standard as an independent garage for servicing as the Techs are pressured into up selling extras and are under a lot of pressure to hit weekly targets. It is in some cases incompetent techs as well (poor diagnosis etc) that let dealers down but you will get that in a lot of places. Current: RRS 2010 L320 Facelift 3.0 TD V6 HSE 5dr Alaska White

I had a customer in earlier this week, to have a set of Xenon headlights retrofitted and enabled.

The customer said he had spoken to his local dealer, and was advised not to carry out the upgrade, as the vehicle "may catch fire"
Despite the higher spec cars coming with Xenons from the factory Rolling Eyes

I had a new starter motor fitted at a dealership. The second new starter motor at that. I had to tell them how the breather pipe was supposed to be routed. I pointed out that leaving it curled up below the starter motor was certainly not the correct way to do it and was the reason the motor was being replaced within 12 months... Censored Apparently the "technician" hadn't read the LR workshop manual.

Oh, and they damaged the steering rack when doing a turbo replacement. Needed a new rack fitting. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Dealers are a joke. Dealers a waste of money and time. I only bring mine back to the dealer I bought it from for its annual service as I have an inhouse dealer warranty. But for anything else I go to independent. For example I had a vibrating steering wheel. Brought to the dealer 3 times and they couldn't fix it under warranty. I asked them was it the calipers sticking and they said it wasn't. They changed the discs pads and EPB shoes all under warranty and it was still doing it. Brought it to local independent mechanic. 5 minutes ltr he diagnosed the issue as a sticking front caliper. Bought a set of 6 pot calipers off ebay. Independent mechanic put them on with new discs and pads and also put on new pads on the rear. Problem fixed. And was 700 euro cheaper...
