Yeh it's best not to have a tow bar in and around Chelsea.

Hi guys, I popped by my local LR stealership this morning to have the valuation of my D4 done.

While I was there, the salesperson showed me a 2012 RRS S/C, which according to the PO had 'overheated'. Turns out the PO had been driving 'spiritedly' up one of our mountain passes just outside of town and the temperature gauge shot up in the red and the car went into limp mode, so he sold it to them.

However, when they opened the engine, they could not see any signs of overheating. They are doing a complete overhaul, and the mechanic said the ony issue they saw was the head gasket, which they have replaced. I saw the engine in pieces, and everything looks nice and clean, no signs of any problems visually.

They are offering me the vehicle (which is spotless inside) for 500k, and it has 120,000km on the clock, although with the engine overhaul, the engine mileage will be different.

I've never heard of an S/C overheating, but is this a common issue?

What do you guys think, is this good deal? If I convince them to throw in a 2-yr warranty, would that be assurance enough?

I've not heard of there being a problem with the engine over heating, there was an issue with the early 4.2SC where the intercooler pump was wired in backwards but that only caused an issue when the car was driven hard or towing.
It may be that the one youre looking at has a falty water pump or it could be something as simple as the thermostat not opening.

apparently the 5.0 v8 engines have a problem with its waterpumps - i think some of the guys on 4x4community had to replace at around 70 000kms. One guy had to get his engine reconditioned due to overheating problems - all these were on Disco4 5.0 V8s.

other than the above it seems that there are no other issues

btw friend of mine recently bought RRS 5.0 SC, and marchochezzi and baben got RR 5.0 SC - havent heard that they had any issues

btw if i were you i would offer them around R450k and take it from there, especially since the one at LR Menlyn (Pretoria) with maintenance plan is going for R549k

thanks vnitos, but the best trade-in they are offering me is R340k

so I'm trying to sell the D4 privately, if no one bites, I'll keep it --
